Gilead is so much like present day Afganistan. It is a government by a few power hungry perverted men, setting up a system to abuse, suppress and violate women. This happens because ordinary men and women fervently hope for a religious govt, where their religion is in control.

It always goes wrong, Afghanistan and Iran are all examples. It doesn't matter, which religion, every religion is capable of this.
