Week 24: Tarot - Pain au Chocolat

So the one thing I know about tarot is that there are 22 major arcana. And like the cards, I wanted my dish for this week to be chosen by chance (or fate if you prefer), so I took my idea note and I numbered things 1-22 and a random number generator chose from the list.

I got #6, making my own puff pastry, probably the biggest bastard on the whole list. I was doing classic puff pastry too, none of this rough puff nonsense. But I did it. and it was indeed a big bastard.

Since making the dough was so time consuming, I decided to do something pretty straightforward for the actual dish. I made pain au chocolat. The dough didn't puff quite as much as I might have hoped but it was mad flakey and noticeably more flavorful than store bought dough. I have the remaining dough in my freezer, which is good because I plan to go the rest of my life without making my own puff pastry dough.

Week 19: Tricolor - Rainbow Cookies

Rainbow cookies are extremely nostalgic for me, as I'm sure they are for anyone else who grew up in New York or probably the Northeast in general. I actually didn't know this but are also called tri-color cookies so super appropriate for the theme. These are supposed to invoke the italian flag but... I don't really get that from them.

The kinda cakey layers of this cookie came out great. Right consistency and flavor, extactly what I remember. The chocolate was fine but I spread it too thick or I should have tried to cut it before it hardened because it didn't cut cleanly as I had it. I got lazy with the rasberry filling and just used jam that I purchased rather than making my own- I was somewhat disappointed with the flavor of the storebought jam. I also love raspberry so I way overfilled them- this both increased the dissapointing flavor and made them really messy.

Overall, they all got eaten so that's the real determinant of the quality.

My location, if you couldn't tell by the kiwi, was New Zealand. There is some arguement about whether the pavlova is Aussie or Kiwi but I think Australia tends to be the loud big brother in these situations and overshadow New Zealand so I went the other way with it. Not that Australia isn't a bucket list destination.

It's a real shame that I was in a rush when I finished these up and got such jank whip pipping and pictures because these were really delicious.

I think I really like pavlova and I've just not had it that much at all. I was a little worried about it being too tart on tart but the Passionfruit was subtle and it all worked well with the flavors I poached the rhubarb in. I felt very pretensious making the olive oil crumble but it was really the stand out ingredient here, worked wonderfully with the fruit and pavlova.
