A 6-handicap shooting 122 in flat-calm links conditions? We need to talk about overseas handicapping.
Sat by the 18th green the other day watching three groups of American tourists finish up in flat-calm weather. Out of all 12 players, exactly one actually holed out a putt—the rest were all given gimmies on slippery, sloped knee-knockers.
I was chatting with the starter/caddy afterward, and he told me he looped for an American the day before who boasted a 6-handicap and shot a 122.
Links golf is tough, but a legitimate 6 is never carding a 122 in benign weather. If you're picking up 4-foot putts all day back home, are you actually playing to your index?
