Looking for balls

I’ve been enjoying playing in competitions for the first time. Up to double figures now.

Think I have most of the etiquette down but one area I’m not sure of is searching for balls, both my own and my partners, particularly on a course that I’m not familiar with. I’ve been both the guy mostly in the fairway most of the day helping others and also been the guy in the group needing the most help.

Are there unspoken rules? Am I meant to keep helping a guy when it’s the tenth time and it’s slowing everything down and he is shooting way over his handicap? Am I being a prick if I insist on my three minutes when and expect a bit of help when I’m shooting a decent score?

If it’s my ball, after the second or third time people have had to spend time looking for mine, I’m giving a 60 second cursory look and going to the provisional.

Weekend Player

Due to work and family commitments I will only be able to play at weekends for at least the next couple of years. Weekday rounds would be so rare that they wouldn't really factor into the decision.

I am wondering if there is a cheaper option than going for full membership, in North Dublin, for someone looking to play about 20 to 30 early weekend rounds per year (teeing off between 7:30am and 9am on weekend mornings), mainly looking for casual weekend competitions so have a very narrow window that many other people are also looking for so hoping there might be a suitable option.

My limit would be €1,000 per year or a max €50 per round.

Thanks.

Buying Irons

Hello,

I have about 700 to spend on a set of irons. Does it make sense to find a new set for 700 or look around for something second hand which would be considered higher quality? Currently a 20 handicap in Dublin

Thanks

Palmerstown Estate in fine condition today

Enjoyed a round on the former PGA National course at Palmerstown House Estate today. Given the lack of rain the fairways were in fair to okay condition. Tee boxes and greens were as good as ever. For the first time in as many months as I can recall- it rained!!! Much needed by most Irish golf courses right now. A great golf course, lots of water, long challenging holes. A must play if you haven’t already had a round.

A must play golf course in Co Wicklow

Played Woodenbridge golf club today in an outing with the Roundwood Golf Society, a nicer group of golfers you struggle to find. To say the course was under several feet of water only a few months ago, it was the driest I’ve ever seen it. All credit to the club and ground staff, the fairways were very playable and the greens in excellent condition. Always a huge pleasure to play this stunning course which winds its way through the wooded river valley and has memorable holes across the river!

A 6-handicap shooting 122 in flat-calm links conditions? We need to talk about overseas handicapping.

Sat by the 18th green the other day watching three groups of American tourists finish up in flat-calm weather. Out of all 12 players, exactly one actually holed out a putt—the rest were all given gimmies on slippery, sloped knee-knockers.

I was chatting with the starter/caddy afterward, and he told me he looped for an American the day before who boasted a 6-handicap and shot a 122.

Links golf is tough, but a legitimate 6 is never carding a 122 in benign weather. If you're picking up 4-foot putts all day back home, are you actually playing to your index?

Budget for driver shaft fitting

I have a G430 max with stock Alta 55s shaft. Driver is the worst part of my game by far. Last lesson I had, the pro suggested trying to get fit for a shaft.

What budget would I need to go to a decent fitter and also allow for some flexibility depending what shaft they recommend? I could stretch to around €350. Am I being unrealistic here as I see the likes of foregolf charging a lot just for the fitting itself.

Road Trip

Hi all

Couple of Aussies looking to do a road trip through your beautiful country next April/May to enjoy all things golf & Guinness.

Any hidden gems you would recommend around Dublin/Cork/Galway/Limerick areas that won’t break the budget?

We be coming off a week at St Andrew’s so not too set on playing all the big names, just happy to experience proper Irish golf culture.

Cheers 🏌️‍♂️

GolfIrelans Society Query - Still going?

Hey,

Been trying to get back into golf here after a lengthy break (over 10 years.) I believe someone was previously trying to get a GolfIreland golf society off the ground.

Did it end up going anywhere?

Golf Ireland Membership Rates

Hey everyone,

Was browsing the web trying to find nice courses to play and the rates can be extortionate. I rang Dromoland Castle Golf (their website is advertised at €225) and after trying (and failing!) to haggle with the girl in the pro shop, near the end of our conversation she happened to ask if I was a Golf Ireland member and told me the Golf Ireland rate was €95. By no means advertised online, etc.

Here's my question- are there any other top courses with a similar discount for Golf Ireland members?? Can we create a list. I'm starting here:

Dromoland €225 - GUI - €95

Irish Open 2026 Tickets – Buy / Sell / Swap Megathread

We’ve had quite a few posts recently from people looking to buy or sell Irish Open tickets, so we’re putting everything in one place.

Please use this thread for all Irish Open ticket buying, selling or swapping.

When posting, make it clear what you have or what you’re looking for. For example:

SELLING – Saturday – 2 tickets – €XX each

or

WANTED – Sunday – 1 ticket

A few simple rules:

Please keep all Irish Open ticket posts in this thread rather than creating separate posts.

State the day, ticket type, quantity and price where applicable.

No mark-ups or ticket touting.

Edit or delete your comment once the tickets are no longer available/wanted.

Be careful when dealing with other users. Check account history and be particularly cautious with new or inactive accounts.

For buyer protection, please use a reputable ticket resale platform such as Toutless to complete any sale. Do not send money directly to unknown users by bank transfer or Revolut. r/golfireland is only providing this thread to connect buyers and sellers and cannot verify tickets or users.

r/golfireland and its moderators are not involved in any transactions and cannot verify sellers, buyers or tickets.

Hopefully this makes it easier for anyone with spare tickets to find someone who wants them, while keeping the main subreddit tidy.

Enjoy the Irish Open.

Roundwood Golf Club in Wicklow

This dry weather is not helping the golf courses. Especially those with no sprinkling systems like Roundwood. It’s an exceptionally scenic course but very hilly. Fabulous views out to sea over Greystones, Mountain View’s over Djouce and Sugarloaf. Some awesome narrow holes through tall pines. At €30 a round it’s great value for money but take a buggy because it’s very hilly. The greens have burned off. It’s not Druid’s Glen or Powerscourt but for the money it’s well worth trying. We had a lot of fun today. Not many people about so with a buggy our two ball round took just 3.5 hours.

Glen Mill Golf Club - Stunning

I posted a few days ago about this fabulous par three course in North Wicklow. Played it this morning and wow, it’s in fantastic condition. The greens are the best I’ve ever seen them. Full credit to the groundskeepers. For €17 a round this is indisputably the best value golf around Dublin. Here’s a few photos from this morning. Sadly the pond on the signature 13th hole has dried up but that will soon be rectified when we have some rain.

Closed Golf Clubs

I was sorting out some old golf bags today, when I came across this golf ball. Glen of the Downs was a stunning golf club in County Wicklow and was one of the first clubs I played when I came to Ireland 16 years ago. Happy memories. Sadly it went under about 10-12 years ago and all that remains is the run down club house.

What memorabilia do you have from golf clubs that no longer exist? Do share!
