Looking for balls
I’ve been enjoying playing in competitions for the first time. Up to double figures now.
Think I have most of the etiquette down but one area I’m not sure of is searching for balls, both my own and my partners, particularly on a course that I’m not familiar with. I’ve been both the guy mostly in the fairway most of the day helping others and also been the guy in the group needing the most help.
Are there unspoken rules? Am I meant to keep helping a guy when it’s the tenth time and it’s slowing everything down and he is shooting way over his handicap? Am I being a prick if I insist on my three minutes when and expect a bit of help when I’m shooting a decent score?
If it’s my ball, after the second or third time people have had to spend time looking for mine, I’m giving a 60 second cursory look and going to the provisional.
