Marking gear

Scrambling a bit as we prep for Camporee a week from Friday. (Hello anyone else from Mecklenburg Apache district!) Our usual trailer-hauler is unavailable for the weekend, so we’ll be splitting MVP* gear among the vehicles.

This will give me a good chance to tag EVERYTHING and kickstart our inventory and checkout system. (Yay!) so my question is: Can I write on tents and rainflies with a Sharpie without damaging the waterproofing?

*My brain was supplying Minimal Viable Product because I work as a systems analyst, but they’re also our Most Valuable Players in the gear. This includes my coffee supplies.

Lurker no more

I’ve been lurking and reading beginner posts for a bit because I wanted to try weaving but was afraid of committing $$$ to something I might not stick to.

Then I saw a fellow beginner’s post (a year old) and someone mentioned a cardboard loom and linked out to The Weaving Loom’s article on making one.

That was what I needed.

I realize my warp is heavier than necessary (I only have one weight of cotton yarn and it’s knitpicks Dishie). But I feel like this isn’t terrible?

I did it!

TL:DR: Thank you for encouraging me!

When I picked my mandolin (her name is My Lady) back up in March, I had a goal to take her to Scout summer camp when I went with my son, especially since the camp his troop selected (Camp Woodruff in Blairsville, GA) has a Folk Festival every week.

I just got home from camp. I played nearly every day in our campsite, and Thursday I took her down to the living history site ahead of the festival. I was playing outside the gate when a younger Scout (probably 10-12) asked me about what the instrument was. I talked a little, and he asked if I could play any songs. I picked Country Roads since it’s broadly familiar.

Then he gave me a token for the root beer that’s only sold at the mercantile in the living history site. (I am now officially a professional musician, since I have been paid for playing music.) He also asked how much my instrument cost. I told home she was about $300, but that there are cheaper ones for about $100.

A few minutes later, I heard him on the phone with his mom asking whether he could buy a mandolin because he had $100 saved up.

(Mom, if this was your son, I hope you give him a chance to explore it!)

Once the site opened for the evening, I went in and asked the musicians whether they would mind if I played along, and they graciously agreed. Granted, my “playing along” was mostly “find a few notes that align with the chords and camp there on the rhythm.” But I was grinning so hard and enjoying myself so much that I didn’t care about any lack of virtuosity on my part. I thanked them again when they were finished and basically floated back to my campsite.

Woodruff laundry question

Heading to summer camp tomorrow and double checking my everything since I can’t sleep.

I can’t find in the documents whether there is a coin-op laundry available at Camp Woodruff in Blairsville, GA.

Mostly looking for it so we can wash the Class As midweek!

Why you gotta do this to us, Matt?

I finished Book 5 today, and I am not okay. (Not angry the way I was with Jim Butcher after Battle Ground, but not okay.)

When >!Donut confronted Bea after they were off the air!< my heart ached, but I was proud.

After >!Miriam died, poor Pony was traumatized, and redirected his fury to burn down the world. Again, I was heartsick, but proud!<. Hey, I have a DARK Phoenix tattoo for a reason. I will b*rn the world down for my family. >!And then he completely broke their stupid MarioKart Death Race like a farging badass.!<

And then, after everybody who survived had survived, we get >!Katia. And the Sepsis tiara.!< And my heart just broke.

I’m going to spend 16-18 hours driving by myself this week, going to and from my nephew’s high school graduation. (My son is still in school, or he’d likely accompany me.) My mask might come off for a bit on the interstate.

Thank you, Matt, for writing characters that I care this much about.

I think.

So, my kid has a band concert Thursday night and his school mentioned that traffic could be an issue because of the golf tournament.

How bad is it going to be? Our travel time to the school is usually about 15 minutes…

I’m looking to find the Dungeon Crawler Carl comic for Free Comic Book Day next week (May 2). We are recent transplants to the CLT, so looking for your recommended shops!
