Is hanging out 1-on-1 with an opposite-sex friend in a private space common in Chinese culture?
I (28M) recently had a disagreement with my Chinese girlfriend (25F) about boundaries with male friends.
To be clear, nothing has actually happened, but we were discussing hypotheticals regarding friends of the opposite sex. I mentioned to her that, moving forward, I would not be comfortable if she were to hang out one-on-one with a male friend in a private space (like her apartment or his apartment) behind closed doors. I emphasized that I have no problem at all with her hanging out with male friends in public.
She disagreed with my boundary and told me that doing this is completely normal in Chinese culture. She said that men and women frequently hang out alone in private spaces even when they are in a committed relationship, and that I am being unusual for having an issue with it.
I am not very familiar with Chinese cultural norms, so I wanted to ask people here. Is this truly a common and accepted practice in Chinese culture? I want to understand her perspective better and not judge it purely from my own cultural lens, but I'm unsure if this is a cultural difference or just her personal view.
