Y1 CC Mods Lecturer Recommendations

Hi! Just wanted to ask if anyone has recommendations for lecturers for the Y1 CC modules. I understand that some lecturers may be stricter in terms of teaching and marking, so I would love to hear your experiences and know which lecturers are generally more approachable or lenient. Thanks in advance!

Quick question about rec list allocation

Hi, if one person has completed the rec list and the other (my sibling) hasn’t, will both parties still be allocated to the same hall — or will we be separated?

Context: Both of us intend to stay in the same hall together, different gender

Freshie here — what’s your go-to study spot in NTU?

Matriculating this year and trying to scope out the best places to study before sem starts.

Curious what spots do people actually go— whether it’s a hidden library, a quiet corner, or even a café you don’t mind paying for just to get a decent seat.

Bonus points if you share:
• Whether it’s good for solo vs group study
• How crowded it actually gets
• Any tips for snagging a spot during exam season

Would love to hear from people who’ve actually been through it rather than just reading guides online 😅

Asking for a friend who skipped physics at O and A levels and is eyeing Mechanical or Aerospace Eng

For those who went in without physics — how bad was Year 1 and subsequent years? Did it snowball or was it manageable? Any topics that really caught them off guard?

Just looking for honest experiences, not reassurance.

Incoming Freshman— Whats an advice you’d give your university self

Hey everyone! Matriculating this year into Engineering and thought I’d ask the seniors before the “chaos begin”

A few things I’ve been wondering about:
Work hard, play hard, or just grind?
• Is the “balance” thing actually real, or do people just say that?
• Does going all-in on studies actually pay off, or do you end up burning out by Year 2?

Hall life and CCAs: worth it or time sink?
• Is there genuinely time to join hall activities or a CCA while keeping your grades intact? Or is it more of a Year 1 thing that you slowly drop as modules get harder?

Engineering specifically, how much mugging does it actually take?
• For those who hit 1st or 2nd class honours, what did your routine actually look like? Is it 8-hour study days or just smart studying? Do you have time to pursue extracurriculars?

“”IMPORTANT””
The one thing you’d do differently (or repeat)?
If you could redo university, what’s the one thing you’d change or do again in a heartbeat?

Not looking for the standard “just enjoy the journey” answer, looking for real, unfiltered take.

Apologies for the long text. Have a great day ahead!

Incoming freshman here — what’s needed for hall living?

Hey everyone! For those who’ve stayed in hall before, would love your advice on what’s genuinely needed.

Thinking along the lines of:

• Extension cord / power strip — is it a must?
• Personal WiFi router — or is the hall network sufficient?
• Insect repellent — how bad are the bugs?
• Wet Wipes

What else would you add to the “don’t leave home without it” list? And equally what did you bring that just collected dust?

Thanks in advance 🙏

Double major or minor — did it actually help you in your career?

For those who took a double major, double degree, minor or specialisation did it actually make a difference in your career?

Looking to hear real experiences, not textbook answers.

• Did hiring managers actually notice or care?
• Did it help you switch industries or land a different role?
• Or was it just something that looked good on paper but meant nothing in practice?

Would love to hear from people already in the workforce!

Is taking a double major, double degree, minor or specialisation actually worth it?

Is taking a double major, double degree, minor or specialisation actually worth it?

I've been wondering how much weight these actually carry whether it's for job applications, postgraduate programmes, or even switching industries later on.

Some questions I have:

• Do employers actually care, or do they just look at your primary degree?
• Does it give you a better shot at getting into a master's programme?
• If you're already in the workforce, does having an additional major or minor open doors to a different industry?
• Or is it just extra stress with little practical payoff?

Anyone have an old JC graphing calculator they don’t need anymore?

Hey everyone!

I'm looking for a JC graphing calculator, if you have one lying around that you no longer need, please consider selling or donating it to me before you throw it away!

Out of touch with Maths and Physics — will I survive engineering?

Hi everyone! I'm starting my engineering degree this year but I've been out of touch with both Maths and Physics for a while now.

I'm wondering is the transition into university-level engineering going to be a steep learning curve, or is it more about recalling what we've already learnt previously?

For those who've been through it:

  1. How big of a jump is university-level content compared to what we covered before?

  2. Did you struggle at the start or did things come back to you fairly quickly?

  3. Any tips on how to prepare before the semester kicks off?

Would really appreciate any advice from those who've been through it! 😊

Entering engineering this year but completely out of touch — is it hard to catch up or just a matter of recalling?

I’m wondering, is the transition into university-level engineering going to be a steep learning curve, or is it more about recalling what we’ve already learnt back in school?

  3. Any tips on how to prepare before the semester starts or during semester ?

Incoming NTU freshmen- Anyone have answers to these questions? 🙏

Hey guys! Just got my offer from NTU and I’m trying to figure out logistics.

Got a few questions that I can’t seem to find clear answers to — would really appreciate if any seniors or people in the know could help out! 😅

  1. When is orientation camp and how long does it run? Is it compulsory? And are there separate camps for hall vs school?
  2. When do we get our hall allocation results? Kinda stressed about this one since I need to plan accommodation early 😬
  3. When do bridging lessons start for Engineering students? And is it very heavy workload-wise?
  4. Any good hackathons or competitions recommended for Engineering freshmen? Would love to get involved early but not sure where to start
  5. How does the timetable work? Do we get to choose our own schedule or is it assigned to us? And how do we make changes if we don’t like it?

Thanks in advance!! Really appreciate any help from seniors 🙌
