I just got home from the business trip from Hell. I had a flight from Madrid to Vancouver with a stopover in Frankfurt. On the flight from Madrid to Frankfurt, which was about 3 hours, I wanted to use the time to summarize the details of the meetings I had on my laptop. The guy in the seat across the aisle was over indulging in alcoholic drinks - his right - and eventually began repeatedly trying to engage me in conversation.
Apparently he was at the same conference, but I don't remember seeing him there, and certainly never interacted with him. Anyway, he began by asking how I liked the conference and I politely said something like it was OK and that I don't mean to be rude, but I've got some work I really need to finish. He seemed kind of put off by this, but left me alone for for a while until the flight
attendant brought him another drink and he told the FA to get me one too. I politely declined, referring to said computer work and he got pissy and said I'd done enough work and to have a drink with him. I don't even know this guy. I said, "Dude. I don't even know you. Please just let me work." He shut up after that. I finished my work and shortly after we landed in Frankfurt.
When I left the plane and entered the terminal to head to the gate to catch my flight to Vancouver, I, like every other international connecting passenger, had to pass through Passport Control. EU citizens have a fast track line that gets them through in no time at all. As for Canadians (me), Americans, Mexicans and any other non-EU citizens, we all have to get in a line that is easily an hour or more long to wait in. The line stretched about 50 metres down the hallway. We'll, that's just how it is. I wasn't thrilled, but I jumped in line. I had about an hour and a half to catch my flight to Vancouver. As I'm about to head to the back of the line, I hear annoying dude who was sitting across the aisle from me mutter "f*** that" and I see him head over to the bar.
So, I wait in the line for an hour and 5 minutes. I figure I'll have about 20 minutes to spare once I get through. As Im waiting in the long line, I can see annoying dude at the bar drinking away. It looks like he's trying to make eye contact with me, but I pretend I don't see him. Finally, at the one hour and 5 minute mark, I make it to the part of the line where the roped-off switchback line actually begins. I can see the passport booths with the customs officers and know I'm within 5 minutes or so of getting though. Just then annoying dude shows up "Hey Man, thanks for saving my place." SERIOUSLY!?! I look at him and say, "Dude, I don't think so." He tries to barge in anyway, at which point a German police officer asks me if this gentleman is with me. I flatly tell him NO. The officer in no uncertain terms informs annoying dude that he must go to the end of the line. As he reluctantly turns to head to the back of the line, he looks at me one more time and calls me a selfish jerk. Well, Redditors, AITJ?
TL;DR An annoying stranger who sat across the aisle from me wanted to budge into the customs line I'd been waiting in for over an hour because he spent that hour at the bar drinking.
