How Do You Do It All??

This is our first summer on a travel team, and with the fall season coming up, I’m wondering how it is all going to fit into our lives.

We don’t have the official fall schedule yet, but this summer there is practice four nights a week and then a local-ish tournament every other weekend or so. It’s been manageable because it is summertime and we don’t have much else going on.

Fall is looking like practice 2 to 3 nights a week one game a week and then a tournament every other weekend. Plus, school and other after school obligations. Her hitting instructor availability overlapped with the summer practice schedule so we took a break from that but needs to get back to it. Plus I have another daughter who is as equally involved in her extracurricular activities. My husband and I both work full-time. He works a lot of nights and weekends. I work from home so I am super lucky to have a flexible schedule so that helps a little bit.

I know so many of us are in the same boat. So I need to ask how do you seasoned travel families do it? What are your tips for squeezing it all in? Having healthy meals. Not having to drive through Chick-fil-A every night. Making sure School is the focus that it needs to be. Getting enough sleep. Being there for both kids and not missing anything. Generally not going crazy of the next 3-4 months?

Struggling with Cadettes

Our troop is going to be 2nd year Cadettes. We’ve reached the point where girls start dropping off for other activities and we are down to a small troop of 5 girls. The problem we have is a lot of them don’t get along and the smaller group size is highlighting that. Honestly it’s getting to the point that I dread meetings because I know all the personalities are going to clash. We have:
Super Hyper girls
Two girls that are in a long standing fight
One girl accused another girl of bullying her, but won’t provide any detail. This girl is also known for bending the truth
One girl who thrives in negative attention and is one of the most miserable people I know.

The only reasons I stay is because some reason my daughter loves it and goes out of her way to stay out of the drama.

My co and I have given up on these girls being scout sisters and just want them to co-exist. We keep hoping they will grow out of the behavior. Parents are aware of the issues and if they want to leave the troop no hard feelings.

Any ideas for things we can do with these girls? They are getting too old for constant crafts. They are all entering 7th grade.

Leaving a Team After Joining

My daughter joined a summer travel team 2 months ago. It’s a B/C (closer to C) level team. Now that we are into it I’m not happy. I’m not in love with the coaching. The girls are sloppy. Games are blowouts. She sits out every other inning while the girls in the field rack up the errors. Coach says it’s because she’s the newest on her team but I watch her blow them away in practice.

This team goes into the fall season if they want to stay on. But tryouts for other fall teams are now. Is it bad form to get out there and jump ship if we find a better fit?

Tournament - First Time!

My girl made the travel team and now we have our first tournament coming up next month! It’s a 2-day but only 25 minutes away. I have never been to a tournament, have no idea what to expect or how to prepare. What do I need to know? Help!

What now??

Where does one go in/after Daddyball (or Mommyball) land to try and give their kid some opportunity? Our little league season (12U) is wrapping up soon. Our team is 0-13. Every game has been a mercy rule loss. Most of the time the winning team has maybe 2-3 hits. They score because the pitcher walks the side until they get their 5 runs. The fielding is atrocious. (An example - 3rd base fumbles the grounder, by the time she recovers it, the runner is already at first. So what does she do? Naturally throws it to first 4 feet to the right of the bag. First base misses it and a single turns into an infield home run because of all the throwing errors.) Is there any discussion about what could be done different? Nope. Only that right field should have been backing up first base. Which she was but 3rd base threw it somewhere else. No accountability for anyone else.

If you’ve made it this far you probably will be SHOCKED to hear the pitcher, 1st base, 3rd base and SS are coach’s kids and cousins. Catcher is an ‘outsider’ but nobody else wants it so it’s hers. The rest of the team fights for an inning at 2nd base.

My daughter (who lives in the outfield) has actually played 2nd and 3rd base since she started playing. She’s been taking a weekly lesson for over a year where she works on batting, basework and pitching. Her instructor asked if she ever gets any chances to pitch in games so she can get some game experience. Her instructor knows her coach through the softball grapevine so she talked to her and was told they were happy with their pitchers.

Our season is over soon. Her confidence and love of the game has really taken a hit. She’s mentioned quitting all together. So where do we go? I’m worried travel ball is more of the same. I also do not have the capacity to volunteer to coach. And I don’t feel like I should have to volunteer to coach for my daughter to get opportunity on a freaking little league teamI paid $200 for her to join.
