Mission Log: Surviving 6 Months of Building and Shipping a Camera
I haven’t touched my development log in months. Here is a scientific fact they don't teach you in school: designing hardware is a standard physics problem; marketing and shipping it, however, is an extinction-level event.
Now that our Shopify store is actually taking orders without bursting into flames, and our tiny Rewindpix SWAT team has assembled, I finally have ten minutes to document how we survived the last six months without violating the laws of thermodynamics.
1. The Kickstarter: Orbital Insertion and Explosive Decompression
The Good:
I’ve been backing Kickstarter campaigns for years, which means my garage contains both ingenious innovations and a non-trivial amount of expensive plastic garbage. Going into this campaign, my primary directive was simple: extreme transparency. Speak like a human being. Amazingly, it worked. Despite a few communication hiccups, our testers caught critical flaws in the nick of time, our factory didn't revolt, and we started shipping just four weeks after the campaign wrapped up. In the hardware world, that’s practically science fiction.
The Bad:
Here is where Murphy’s Law deployed its heavy artillery. I spent over a decade working in supply chains, and my single most valuable survival skill had always been actively running away from parcel logistics. Naturally, the universe punished me by demanding I ship 8,000+ cameras and accessories across the globe.
Turns out, international shipping is an eldritch horror. Lost packages, customs inspectors who scrutinize invoices like they hold personal grudges, ghost couriers, and international addresses formatted in ways that to locate the 3^(rd) tree east of the convenient store by the water pond. I arrogantly calculated fulfillment would take two months. Reality laughed in my face, and as of today, I am still staring into the endless abyss of our fulfillment spreadsheet. As someone on Discord gently pointed out: I tend to give myself zero margin of error. Yes. Guilty as charged.
2. The Discord: A Lifeboat Full of Geniuses
Aside from the sensory joy of turning raw metal and circuits into a working tool, this community has been the absolute highlight of the mission. In an infinite, cynical internet, an army of strangers gathered around an unproven, screen-free oddity. Watching our revenue tick upward was neat; watching this community form was what actually kept my life-support systems running.
Together with our field testers and early backers, we hunted down bugs like invasive species:
- Reducing shutter lag to the hardware limits
- Taming the wild white balance on the flash
- Rebuilding the app UI from scratch
- Unlocking custom film recipes
- Tightening factory QC tolerances until the calipers begged for mercy
The patience of these backers defies evolutionary biology. If I had bought this camera and encountered half of these early firmware hiccups, I would have thrown it against a wall, demanded a refund, and yelled about a "Kickstarter scam" on Reddit. Instead, they sent debug logs. Absolute legends.
3. The Academy Awards Speech (Minus the Tuxedo)
I’d like to thank the foreign press and the Hollywood Academy... kidding.
- To my Crowdfunding Campaign Manager: Who understood ad algorithms so I didn't have to or never will, and single-handedly stopped me from posting catastrophic nonsense on Instagram.
- To my very first full-time hire: Who willingly descended into the logistical inferno in June 2026. Without him, your cameras would still be floating somewhere in an abandoned shipping container in the Pacific. Forever.
- To my son: Whom I think about every single second. Playing with you is literally the only cognitive state where my brain completely purges shipping labels and bugs.
4. The Flight Plan Forward
Rewindpix is a startup. Statistically speaking, all startups flirt with sudden death. But my goal was never to harvest people for cash; it was to build something tangible and joyful, and put it in people's hands. We will keep listening, and we will keep iterating.
