Digital ID Sovereignty

We are often so wrapped up in discussions about Tokenisation that we forget about some of the massive things happening (Kind of outside of the world of finance- although everything connects back to Finance in the end). Things for which Hedera is incredibly placed.

One (of several) is in the national management of Digital Identity. National Management of Identity is a sensitive issue for most countries. But lets look at the EU in particular because they actually have legislation coming in for eIDAS 2.0 due to roll out over the next two or three years.

Many countries in the EU (and beyond) currently use Hyperledger BESU to manage their ID systems, normally utilising a network of BESU Private servers (EBSI). But there is a problem (Hence the need for eIDAS 2.0). The problem is essentially this. Private Networks are great for ID management within a particular Government, but they fail (completely) when it comes to things like using a Government ID with external Businesses or in Cross Border situations. -eg. Where a French Business wants to check the ID Status of a German Citizen.

So, how does that impact Hedera?

Well. There are are a number of current situation factors worth noting at the moment.

  1. The EU is currently pretty frustrated with the attitude of the current US administration. They are actively looking for ways to reduce dependence on US Tech and actually US anything at the moment.

  2. Open Source. (The Linux Foundation). As I mentioned, most EU Countries already heavily leverage EBSI, a network of BESU servers for Identity Management. Their appetite for Open Source generally and Linux Foundation Software in particular is growing dramatically, partly because of point 1 above but also because Open Source frameworks are opening up a competitive opportunity for the EU that is not common elsewhere.

  3. eIDAS 2.0 is, in part at least, a recognition that Agentic AI is coming and there is a need to cater for it within their systems. One of the issues with BESU is it will not handle the massive volume of Txns that any such system implemented across the EU will generate.

  4. I would argue that Hedera is just about ready (Its integration into the numerous Linux Foundation tools such as Firefly, CACTI and Aries, is now deep and rich). The recent introduction of HEKA and with CLPR perhaps being the final piece of the puzzle (and we all know that as soon as Hashgraph has CLPR endpoints there will be a push for CLPR BESU endpoints). This means Hedera has an almost unrivalled set of integration points with the EU`s current main ID Platform (A platform they will NOT want to lose).

Now, obviously, its not a done deal. A quick and dirty solution to some of the key requirements of eIDAS 2.0 might be to simply add IAM (US Centric Identity Companies like MS or Ping) wrappers to current ID solutions. But this would be a VERY brittle solution that would not support the anticipated AI workloads. But given the EU`s increasing appetite for Open Source/Linux, their current heavy use of Hyperledger BESU (and its heavy integration into Hiero/Hedera) and the capacity of Hiero to handle AI plus the increasing readiness of Hiero for AI at every level, this looks like Hedera are extremely well positioned.

Just another potential avenue to success for Hedera to consider.

Up until now Hedera (and its Foundations/ Partners and Associates `et al`) have largely been focused on building the platform. And proving it. In 2026 the platform will have seven years of proven (almost error free) operation under its belt (Which is a very well established `minimum` time frame for Business Critical Use of any IT platform).

Over the last two years we have seen the rise of Domain Specific Tools, designed for specific use cases that Hedera et al have expected the Business Market to need in order to get going with DLT. Products like RWA Studio, AI Studio, IDTrust, TraceTrack and lets not forget... ServiceNow etc. Tools that are essentially designed to enable Business Use Cases to be quickly adopted.

Now, with project Hiero and Accenture, we are seeing all the signals that other Businesses are embedding the Hedera Public DLT tech, as optional modules, into new, but also critically, already established `Domain Solutions`. Whilst I do think they have been preparing the ground for quite a while, finally, after seven years of proven operation, Accenture are prepared to put their name and reputation on the Hedera platform.

Obviously there are more people `selling` Hedera now, but what this tells you is that Hedera `et al` have been through the process of integrating numerous third party products into Hedera and modularising Hederas use with those third party tools multiple times now. So the product is much more adapted to letting such integration happen and the processes are much better established for doing it.

When industry participants see a company like Accenture essentially embedding Hedera into their own Solutions, other Business Software and Business /IT Management type companies are going to start following suit. Over time it will become less optional for them (As everyone else will start having a Hedera DLT Link and it will be easier and easier for them anyway (because the tools and processes are established and documented).

This is how Enterprises are won. It`s almost the only strategy that is likely to work. Finally, in September this year, Hedera, with that all important seven years under its belt (and possibly/hopefully the Clarity Act as a crowning glory), will be in the perfect position to execute on the vision.

This is a very significant year for Hedera, it is the year that the kid, who was born to two healthy and happy geniuses who were both devoted parents and brilliant teachers, who was educated at the finest schools an universities and by the best professional coaches and gained the top diplomas in....everything, who was then connected to everyone important in the profession they had always loved and always wanted to be in, starts his/her professional career. Nothing in life is guaranteed, but it sure looks rosy.

If you ask me, Hedera prior to 2026 is going to look very different in 2027.

BTW I am not (for the troll factory/moon boys here) predicting Hedera will be the established Gorilla of Enterprise Public DLT in 2027 -though that might just happen, there is a lot of VERY noisy, wealthy competition out there and quite a lot of `market friction` to be overcome, even if Clarity passes. What I am saying is that everything points to Hedera being far better positioned than anyone else to become the established Enterprise Public DLT Gorilla as the market develops.
