I looked for my phone while holding it in my hand

I have to confess that I spent a solid minute looking for my phone the other day.

I checked my pockets, looked around my desk, and even started thinking about where I had used it last.

Then I realized I was holding it in my hand the entire time.

The worst part is that I was using the flashlight on my phone to help me look for it.

I pretend I’m on the phone when I don’t want to talk to someone

Sometimes when I see someone I know in public and I’m not in the mood to talk, I immediately pull out my phone and pretend I’m having a very important conversation.

I pretend I didn't hear people when I'm wearing headphones

Sometimes I don't even have music playing. I just keep my headphones on because I'm not emotionally prepared for a conversation yet.

The worst part is when someone talks to me and I have to decide whether to admit I heard them or commit to the lie and pretend I genuinely didn't notice.

I've probably said “sorry, what?” while making direct eye contact more times than I'd like to admit.

Sometimes I open the fridge just because I'm bored, not because I'm hungry.

I'll stare inside for ten seconds.

See absolutely nothing new.

Close it.

Then somehow repeat the exact same thing fifteen minutes later.

I always pretend I don't see people I know in the grocery store.

If I spot someone I know from far away, my first instinct is to suddenly become extremely interested in the cereal aisle.

It's not because I dislike them. I just don't have the energy for unexpected small talk while I'm trying to remember whether I need milk.

If they notice me first, I'm happy to chat. But if they don't... neither do I.

I always say "what?"... then immediately understand what they said.

Someone says something.

Me: "What?"

My brain finally processes it.

Them: starts repeating...

Me: "Oh, never mind."

I do this way more often than I'd like to admit.
