Post Fireworks bWAR Party 7/5

O's started July off with a win streak. Patriotism is good luck. 🇺🇸🎆🎇

All star Adley's back! 🥳

Bradish's start lost him .2, so he's down to 1.2 on the season. Baz gained .3, for a total of .9. Gibson lost .5, so he's at -.6 as he returns to AAA. He spend three rotations at -.1. Kremer gained .3 in his return, putting him at .2 after three games. TRog gained .3, so he's up to .6, .2 away from his season high, and 1.5 above his season low. Young gained .1, so he's back to 1.1 on the season.

Mayo has the lowest bWAR on the team at -.8, and Trey Gibson comes in second with -.6. Second lowest on the active roster is TON and Anthony Nunez with -.4 each. That's an improvement for TON since last time, when he had the second lowest with -.6.

I'd usually expect someone who's been on the IL for over two months to struggle a bit coming back, but it looks like Kremer mostly just wants it to not be April. Also, Gibson going back to AAA means our entire rotation is currently made up of guys with positive bWAR! Also, ten of the top twelve are above 1.0, with the other two not all that far behind! Last year, we finally had the entire top twelve at 1.0 at once on September 13th. Akin was the last piece that time.

Cano, JJax, and Taveras left the top twelve, and Baz and Wells took their places

In order: Alonso 1.9; Adley 1.7; Ward 1.6; Basallo and Gunnar 1.5; Garcia, Blaze, and Bradish 1.2; Cowser and Young 1.1; Baz .9; and Wells .8.

Last time's in order: Ward 2; Alonso 1.9; Adley 1.6; Basallo and Bradish 1.4; Blaze and Gunnar 1.1; Garcia and Young 1; Cano and Cowser .8; JJax and Taveras .7.

9 at 1 or More bWAR Party 6/28

Bradish's start was good for .5 bWAR, bringing him to 1.4 on the season, the ninth player to pass 1.0. Baz lost .2, and dropped to .6. Gibson didn't gain or lose any bWAR, so he's still at -.1. This is now three starts with no change in bWAR for Trey Gibson. TRog gained .3, having been at zero, so he's now back into the positives for the first time since April. Young lost .1, but not actually from his start, that was just one of the little adjustments Baseball-Reference does from time to time, so he's at 1.0 now.

Elias plans to buy at the deadline? Plenty of room to upgrade. Coby Mayo still holds the worst bWAR on the team (-.7,) followed closely by Kittredge and TON (-.6.) Doesn't necessarily mean their positions are even the most crucial, although bullpen help would probably be a good move.

In order: Ward 2; Alonso 1.9; Adley 1.6; Basallo and Bradish 1.4; Blaze and Gunnar 1.1; Garcia and Young 1; Cano and Cowser .8; JJax and Taveras .7.

Last time's in order: Alonso and Ward 1.8; Adley 1.6; Garcia 1.5; Basallo 1.4; Gunnar 1.3; Blaze 1.2; Young 1.1; Bradish and Cowser .9; JJax and Baz .8.

Middle Left Coast Road Trip bWAR Party 6/22

We now have 8 players with 1.0 or more bWAR 🥳
Naturally, this doesn't include today's game. It never does, it's just that I'm posting this late enough that it seems like I should mention that.

Bradish's (previous, not today) start gained him .4 bWAR, bringing him back up to .9 on the season! Baz only gained .1, but that brings him to .8. Gibson didn't gain or lose, so he's still sitting at -0.1, which is perfectly fine considering. TRog gained .5, so he's all the way back to 0.0 on the season! Not bad, considering he was sitting at -.9 at one point. And finally, Young gained .3, bringing him up to 1.1, our first starting pitcher of the year to crest 1.0! 🥳

I look forward to either seeing BY pitch in the ASG, or complaining about the blatant snub.

Taveras left the top twelve, and was replaced by Bradish. We currently have three starters in the top twelve. TON (-.6) is no longer the lowest bWAR on the team, that's Mayo (-.7,) and the lowest among pitchers is Kittredge (-.5.)

In order: Alonso and Ward 1.8; Adley 1.6; Garcia 1.5; Basallo 1.4; Gunnar 1.3; Blaze 1.2; Young 1.1; Bradish and Cowser .9; JJax and Baz .8.

Last time's in order: Ward and Adley 1.8; Alonso 1.7; Basallo 1.4; Garcia 1.3; Gunnar 1.2; Blaze, Young, Taveras, and JJax .8; and Baz and Cowser .7.

Starting Left Coast Road Trip bWAR Party 6/17

It's a long season, there's still time to get going, but that won't be true forever, so it'd be nice if they'd get on with it.

Bradish lost .1, for a total of .5 on the season. Baz gained .1 to get to .7. Gibson lost .3, so he's dropped below zero to -.1. TRog gained .2, bringing him back up to -.5. He is still our lowest bWAR pitcher, since Nunez can't keep dropping while in AAA, and Kittredge and Akin have also improved. Young gained .1, so he's up to .8, which is the most bWAR of any starter this year. TRog had .8 after is start on 4/7, and Baz had it after 6/2, but they didn't quite maintain it.

Bradish and Cano aren't in the top twelve anymore, and they didn't get replaced, since they were in a tie for 11th. Bradish didn't lose much, and Cano didn't lose any, it's just that the floor moved up a little.

TRog is no longer the lowest bWAR on the team, that dubious honor goes to TON with -.6 in 44 games.

In order: Ward and Adley 1.8; Alonso 1.7; Basallo 1.4; Garcia 1.3; Gunnar 1.2; Blaze, Young, Taveras, and JJax .8; and Baz and Cowser .7.

Last time's in order: Ward 1.8; Adley 1.6; Garcia 1.5; Basallo 1.4; Alonso 1.3; Taveras 1.1; Gunnar 1.0; Young, Cowser, and JJax .7; Blaze, Baz, Bradish, and Cano .6.

There will likely be a whole series left in the road trip by the next time I do one of these. I'm in the central time zone, but that still leaves a typical west coast game ending around midnight here. I'm probably gonna miss a lot of 9th inning drama because I have to work in the morning :(

Brandon Young Appreciation Day bWAR Party 6/11

Gunnar has reached 1.0 bWAR, meaning we now have seven of the top twelve up there.

Bradish's start lost him .3, for a total of .6 on the season. Baz lost .2 to also end up at .6. Trey Gibson lost .1, bringing him to .2 on the season, which is still respectable for four games in his debut season. TRog's start lost him .1 bWAR, for -.7 on the season, the lowest among all Orioles, .1 lower than Tyler O'Neill and Anthony Nunez.

Brandon Young gained .4, so he's up to .7 on the season, leading all Orioles starters. He's in the three way tie for eighth best bWAR on the team now. :)

Where would the Orioles be without Brandon Young? Out of it, probably.

In order: Ward 1.8; Adley 1.6; Garcia 1.5; Basallo 1.4; Alonso 1.3; Taveras 1.1; Gunnar 1.0; Young, Cowser, and JJax .7; Blaze, Baz, Bradish, and Cano .6.

Last time's in order: Garcia and Ward 1.7; Basallo and Adley 1.5; Alonso 1.2; Taveras 1.1; Bradish and Gunnar .9; Baz .8; JJax .7; Cano .5; and Cowser .4.

Is It Too Soon To Say We're So Back bWAR Party 5/6

Gunnar's career bWAR (22.1) so far is less than 5 away from catching Ned Garver (26.8) for the 24th highest bWAR for an Oriole (well, Brown) all time. 24th is when you get your picture on the Baseball-Reference team page.

Kyle Bradish gained .4 last time out, bringing him to 1.0, except that BR sometimes does small adjustments throughout the season, so he's actually at .9. That's the only one where I'm not going to pretend like the adjustment was there all along. Shane Baz gained .3, bringing him up to .8. Chris Bassitt took -.2 for his three innings of work, bringing him to -.1 on the season. Trevor Rogers gained .2 this time, bringing him up to -.7. Brandon Young gained .1, bringing him to .3 on the season, just missing out on the top twelve this time through. Cade Povich gained .1 while on the IL, so now he's at .2.

There's three ties in the top twelve this time, and we did briefly have a seventh player at or above 1.0, but we've got two .9s, a .8, and a .7, so we may well get that back for real next time.

In order: Garcia and Ward 1.7; Basallo and Adley 1.5; Alonso 1.2; Taveras 1.1; Bradish and Gunnar .9; Baz .8; JJax .7; Cano .5; and Cowser .4.

Last time's in order: Garcia 1.6; Basallo and Adley 1.4; Ward 1.3; Taveras 1.1; Alonso .9; Gunnar .8; Bradish and JJax .6; Baz and Cano .5; Wells .4.

Also, ASG voting's open, and I know a couple catchers who should really be there 👀

Let's Have More Weeks Like That bWAR Party 5/31

The order of the rotation has changed.

Bradish's start earned .3 bWAR, so he's up to .6 on the season. Baz also got .3, so he's up to .5 now. Trey Gibson ALSO got .3, and his first two appearances got zero bWAR, so he's at .3 on the season. You'll never guess this, but Bassitt's start was also worth .3, so he's into the positives with .1. TRog's start was probably worth .3 if the seventh hadn't happened, but it wound up being -.1, for -.9 on the season. Still looked like he was turning a corner, though. And finally, Brandon Young got .2, so he's into the positives properly at .2 on the season. That's right, we had six starters this time through the rotation, and the only ones who didn't get .3 can reasonably be blamed on someone else!

Seriously, the entire rotation looked good this time through, and it's made a huge difference. Also, our catchers are tied with each other for second highest bWAR on the team.

Baz is now in the top twelve, and Helsley is out. With that, the entire top twelve is currently on the active roster.

In order: Garcia 1.6; Basallo and Adley 1.4; Ward 1.3; Taveras 1.1; Alonso .9; Gunnar .8; Bradish and JJax .6; Baz and Cano .5; Wells .4.

Last tine in order: Garcia and Ward 1.3; Adley 1.2; Alonso and Basallo 1.1; Taveras 1.0; Cano and JJax .7; Gunnar .6; Wells .4; Helsley and Bradish .3.

Starters Turning it Around? bWAR Party 5/25

(This doesn't include today's game.)

Bradish's start last time through was good for .1 bWAR, so he's up to .3 on the season, and is tied for 11th on the team. Baz did even better, gaining .4 for a total of .2 on the season. Bassitt didn't gain or lose, so he's still at -.2, but Young gained .2, so he's up to 0.0.

The only starter who lost bWAR was TRog, but even he only lost .1, so he's down to -.8. Unfortunately, that puts him in sole possession of the worst bWAR on the team as of right now. That could change, but that's where we are as of right now.

Eflin is back out of the top twelve, but nobody actually left. The order just changed a little bit from last time. Nobody moved between rows, even.

In order: Garcia and Ward 1.3; Adley 1.2; Aonso and Basallo 1.1; Taveras 1.0; Cano and JJax .7; Gunnar .6; Wells .4; Helsley and Bradish .3.

Last time in order: Ward 1.4; Garcia 1.3; Basallo and Adley 1.1; Alonso and Taveras 1.0; JJax and Cano .7; Helsley and Wells .3; and Gunnar, Eflin, and Bradish .2.

Yes, That's a Guy Who Hasn't Played Since March bWAR Party 5/19

There's some good news on the starting pitching front: one of our five active starters has a positive bWAR right this very second!!!!!1!!! 🎉

It's Kyle Bradish. He gained .3 bWAR last time, to bring him to .2 on the year, tied with Zach Eflin. Get this: that wasn't the only positive change! Shane Baz gained .2, so he's up to -.1, so close to breaking even! 🥳

Chris Bassitt stayed at -.1, and Brandon Young gained .1, so he's up to -.2. That's four starters who, at the very least, didn't LOSE bWAR last time through the order! PROGRESS!

Trevor Rogers did lose bWAR to the tune of .4, so he's down to -.7 the lowest among all Orioles pitchers on the season. On the other hand, he actually GAINED .1 fWAR, and is still above water there, so make of that what you will.

Oh yeah, we have six players at or above 1.0 bWAR. One's even a pitcher! Eflin re-entered the top twelve in a three way tie, and nobody left.

In order: Ward 1.4; Garcia 1.3; Basallo and Adley 1.1; Alonso and Taveras 1.0; JJax and Cano .7; Helsley and Wells .3; and Gunnar, Eflin, and Bradish .2.

Last time in order: Garcia 1.3; Ward 1.2; Adley 1.1; Alonso and Basallo .9; JJax and Taveras .7; Cano .6; and Helsley, Wells, Gunnar, and Enns .3.

Three Above 1.0 bWAR Party 5/13

"I like this rotation, should be pretty good"
-Me, before the season began.

Bradish didn't gain or lose any bWAR this time around, so he's still at -.2 on the season. Baz lost .4, so he's down to -.3. Bassitt actually gained .1, so he's matched his season high mark of -.1 bWAR. Akin didn't gain or lose any by opening. Young didn't gain or lose any, so he's still at -.3. Rogers lost .5, so he joins literally all of our starters who aren't on the IL in the negatives with -.3. 🥺

If you're wondering, our worst pitcher by bWAR is Kittredge (-0.6) For a position player, it's Mayo (-.9.)

On the other hand, we have three players above 1.0, and two more only .1 off! 🥳 If Beavers rides on Basallo or Alonso's shoulders, that's a 1.0 bWAR player! Put Gunnar on JJax or Taveras, and that's another!

Eflin and Rogers left the top twelve, but weren't replaced by anyone, since there was a tie at twelfth before.

In order: Garcia 1.3; Ward 1.2; Adley 1.1; Alonso and Basallo .9; JJax and Taveras .7; Cano .6; and Helsley, Wells, Gunnar, and Enns .3.

Last time's in order: Ward 1.2; Garcia and Alonso 1.1; Adley .9; Basallo .8; Taveras, JJax, and Cano .6; Gunnar and Helsley .4; Wells .3; and Enns, Eflin, and Rogers .2.

Five Relievers bWAR Party 5/8

None of our starters had positive bWAR contributions this time through the rotation.

Bradish lost .2 bWAR, bringing him to -.2 on the season. Trey Gobson didn't gain or lose any bWAR in his respectable debut. Baz lost .2, so he's down to .1 now. Bassitt lost .1 for -.2 on the year. Young didn't gain or lose, so he's still at -.3. And lastly, Povich lost .1, so he's down to .1 now.

Y'know who DID have positive contributions was the bullpen. We now have five relievers in the top twelve, and four of those are on the active roster! We also have four active relievers with negative bWAR, but I think a couple of those are deceptive. Lou Trivino, I don't know, but if Akin/Kittridge/Wolfram all finish the season in the negatives, I'd honestly be surprised.

Dietrich Enns entered the top twelve, but Nunez and Povich both left.

In order: Ward 1.2; Garcia and Alonso 1.1; Adley .9; Basallo .8; Taveras, JJax, and Cano .6; Gunnar and Helsley .4; Wells .3; and Enns, Eflin, and Rogers .2.

Last time's in order: Ward 1.4; Adley 1.2; Garcia .9, Alonso and JJax .7; Gunnar .6; Basallo, Cano, and Taveras .4; Helsley and Baz .3; and Nunez, Wells, Povich, Eflin, and Rogers tied for twelfth at .2.

It's kinda weird to do one of these NOT right after Trevor Rogers pitched.

A hurricane party is legitimately when Floridians have a party during a hurricane.Bradish gained .1 bWAR, so he's now out of the nagatives at 0.0! Baz gained .3, so he's now in the positives at .3! Bassitt also gained .3, but he's still at -.1. That's three whole positive contributions from the rotation! :)

Brandon Young, however, lost a shocking .7. He's dropped all the way from .4 to -.3. Having a blowup on a day you can't possibly come out before the fifth'll do that, I suppose. Povich only lost .2, so he's still in the positives at .2.

Adley has joined Taylor Ward by passing 1.0! The highest bWAR in the MLB for a position player is Matt Olson's 2.2, so Adley's on pace to catch up, as of right now. The highest in the AL is Kevin McGonigal, Yordan Alvarez, and Jordan Walker with 1.9 each.

In order: Ward 1.4; Adley 1.2; Garcia .9, Alonso and JJax .7; Gunnar .6; Basallo, Cano, and Taveras .4; Helsley and Baz .3; and Nunez, Wells, Povich, Eflin, and Rogers tied for twelfth at .2.

Last time's in order: Ward 1.4; Adley and JJax .9; Garcia .8; Nunez, Povich, and Gunnar .5; Young and Taveras .4; Alonso, Basallo, Helsley, and Cano .3.

Well, the rotation certainly rotated, didn't it?

Bradish gained .1, bringing him up to -.1 until tomorrow. Baz lost .1, which leaves him with an even 0.0 bWAR. Bassitt lost .2, for a total of -.4 on the season. Brandon Young gained .1 for a total of .4, making him our highest bWAR starter currently in the rotation, and second starter overall. Rogers lost .1 to bring him down to .2.

Samuel Basallo has reappeared in the top twelve, but he's actually in the picture this time, and there's no tie at 0.0 miking it on there, like the first time. Cano is still there, just not pictured.

Unfortunately, it was Trevor Rogers who dropped out to make room.

It's still a bWAR party, though, and we've got something to celebrate! Adley's gained more than .1 bWAR per game since returning from the IL, gaining .4 in three games! If he can keep the same pace from those three games, he'll finish the season right around 19 bWAR. If we assume he'll play every day the rest of the season, and go by his total bWAR on the year, he finishes with a more modest 9.34. Obviously those numbers are a bit... optimistic, but that's just how awesome he's been so far.

Also, Taylor Ward's tied for 11th highest bWAR among all position players as of Sunday night, and is on pace for 8.4.

In order: Ward 1.4; Adley and JJax .9; Garcia .8; Nunez, Povich, and Gunnar .5; Young and Taveras .4; Alonso, Basallo, Helsley, and Cano .3.

Last time's in order: JJax and Ward 1.0; Garcia .8, Adley, Taveras, and Povich .5; Alonso .4; and Nunez, Gunnar, Helsley, Cano, Young, and Rogers .3.
