Where and how to add additional seating to our family room?

We recently bought a house with a gorgeous family/great room. It features stunning floor-to-ceiling windows and an operational fireplace. We’ve placed our L-shaped sectional sofa into the room (from our previous rental) but are struggling to decide on a layout for additional seating.

Do we buy a 2-seater loveseat and block the fireplace? Maybe 2 accent chairs instead and place them at an angle in front? I want something comfortable and practical that guests can sit in when they visit, ideally cozy seats that you can sink into. No need for this seating to have visibility to the TV.

Any suggestions?

The room is still a work in progress. It’s currently lacking end tables, throw pillows, and a bookcase that will go where the floor lamp is currently. We also have small children so we have to be intentional with what goes on the floor. The decor above the fireplace will be replaced with a large painting in time.

Is this mirror too small for this space?

We have an alcove above our fireplace in the main family room and I bought a mirror to go above it. The idea is to add candles, photos, and plants to fill in the space a bit. However, I’m thinking the mirror is maybe too small? It’s 30” diameter. Should I go bigger?

I haven’t decided yet if I’ll mount it on the wall or leave it leaning.

How to layout this great room?

We recently bought a house with a gorgeous family/great room. It features stunning floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook a wooded natural area. We love to sit and look outside. Included are some photos from the original listing.

Now that we’ve moved in, we’re struggling to find a layout for a couch and TV that will work for us. Most of our old furniture already has a home elsewhere or won’t work in the space, so we pretty much have free reign for how we want to go about this room – most everything will be purchased new.

Here are the constraints:

·         Ideally we’d like a seating arrangement that maximizes views out the windows. This means not putting the couch back up against the windows, if at all possible.

·         We will NOT be putting the TV above the fireplace. Not only are there no outlets, but we are also adamantly against this trend. My thoughts are to the left of the fireplace at an angle, although this restricts the size TV we can buy.

·         There is built-in cabinetry on the south wall. It’s not large enough to hold a TV and nor we do want the reflection from the windows glaring the screen. It will be used for books and décor only.

·         We want a clear path to the stairwell.

·         There are no blinds or curtains on the windows. With that in mind, we want to minimize glare on the TV screen.

Any thoughts on how to best go about this?

How to decorate this foyer space?

We recently bought a house with a gorgeous double foyer entry with winding stairs. The floor is a real marble and it’s honestly a lovely space. However, I have no idea how to decorate the area in front of the stairs. We don’t have any items that *need* to be there — a shoe bench, entryway console table, and coat closet are all elsewhere — so we have free reign to do something purely decorative.

Any thoughts?

There’s an HVAC vent I’d like to obscure (but not block), otherwise I’m open to any and all suggestions.
