The Alliance Alive (#554)

Classic-style, turn-based JRPG originally released on the 3DS. It follows a ragtag group of resistance fighters battling to overthrow daemons and beastmen who conquered humanity centuries ago. The game features open-world exploration, a unique "awakening" combat system, and a deep guild mechanic.

Unlike traditional RPGs, there are no "Experience Points" (EXP). Instead of grinding for levels, your character's stats (like HP and SP) increase randomly at the end of combat, and your weapon skills are "awakened" in the heat of battle through repetition.

As you progress, you will unite and recruit various NPCs into human-staffed Guilds scattered across the map (e.g., Recon, Library, Blacksmith). Building and expanding guild towers provides significant passive benefits in battle, such as reducing incoming damage, spotting enemies, or granting access to better equipment.

Switch version updates the 3DS classic by streamlining the UI for a single screen and sharpening the colorful chibi, watercolor-style graphics. It also fixes some pacing criticisms of the original by adding convenient 4x speed options for battles and a fast-forward function to minimize grinding.

Have the 3DS version that I honestly never touched. So eventually I'll get around to experiencing the switch version and then dive backwards into the 3DS version to experience the difference. Just another great RPG to add to your collection.

Verdict:

The Alliance Alive HD Remastered is generally positively enjoyed, holding a Metacritic score of 74/100 from critics. Reviewers widely praise it as a charming, "comfort food" JRPG that beautifully recaptures the nostalgic feel of golden-age PlayStation 1 and 3DS era classics. However, it is also noted for its low-budget presentation, with some pointing out its simplistic handheld origins.

Otoko Cross: Naked Remix 1 (#553)

Late post, probably better that way. Noticed Naked Remix 2 that I grabbed was a sequel , so hunted down part 1. Same concept but here we go...

Adult-themed physical compilation of puzzle games that explores the Japanese otokonoko subculture. It includes exclusive, uncensored nude content for its characters that is entirely omitted from digital eShop releases.

Pretty much it. Contains two games. A solitaire Klondike type and mahjong solitaire type.

Verdict:

Serves as a highly niche, specialized collector's item targeted strictly at fans of the otokonoko culture. Another one to expand the collection and complete a series.

Boo Party (#552)

Interesting game cover but the gameplay is actually a coherent and competent game. Here me out.

A humorous, top-down 16-bit retro adventure game developed by CosmiKankei and published by EastAsiaSoft. The game is essentially a massive, puzzle-forward comedy fetch quest aimed at adult audiences due to its explicit fan service.

You control a dorky, nameless photographer hired by a sketchy scientist named Dr. Lesbrock. The scientist sends you into a massive, sprawling haunted mansion to gather photographic proof that ghosts and monsters exist. Instead of terrifying phantoms, you find a relaxed Halloween party atmosphere where 12 supernaturally seductive monster ladies are hanging out.

You freely navigate a multi-room mansion (including areas like a meat locker, basement, pool, and gym) to talk to different NPCs.

The supernatural residents will not let you take their picture easily. You must run continuous errands and chain favors together. For instance, you might grab a warm scarf for a freezing skeleton, trade it for raw beef, take that beef to a witch to cook a burger, and give the burger to a vampire.

Side quests often trigger quirky mini-games, including rhythm challenges, sports games, and climbing trials.

Once an entity's task is complete, you snap her photo. Returning these photos to Dr. Lesbrock’s van rewards you with "Spirit Points," the in-game currency needed to unlock deeper parts of the house or buy quest items.

The core reward of the game is unlocking spicy, pinup mementos of the monster ladies in your album. Because these final hand-drawn photographs depict cartoon nudity, the game features an ESRB Mature rating. However, the developers included a "Censor" switch feature in the game options. If you turn this feature off, the nude images are restricted or blocked from being viewed, keeping the game centered purely on its goofy, retro puzzle mechanics.

Verdict:

Boo Party on the Nintendo Switch is generally positive, treating it as a surprisingly fun and charming budget title. While initially dismissed by some as standard adult "fan-service" bait, reviewers largely agree that its gameplay mechanics, humor, and presentation hold up well on their own merits.

If you can tolerate old-school, guide-reliant navigation, Boo Party is an incredibly solid, lighthearted, and highly recommended casual puzzle game for its cheap price point.

AA and that's it. Go grab yourself a copy. Comes with a physical CD soundtrack too. You're welcome.

The Friends of Ringo Ishikawa & Arrest of a Stone Buddha Collection (Import) (#551)

The Friends of Ringo Ishikawa and Arrest of a Stone Buddha are existential, atmospheric games created by indie developer yeo. Instead of traditional action games, they dive into more of a character study about aging, futility, and the passage of time.

The Friends of Ringo Ishikawa: The Weight of Growing Up

This game is a slice-of-life "delinquent simulator" that captures the final weeks of high school for a gang leader.

You choose how to spend Ringo's days. You can study, skip class, work a part-time job, read, smoke, eat, or get into street brawls.

Arrest of a Stone Buddha: The Numbness of Routine

Set in 1970s France, this game strips away the open-world freedom of Ringo and replaces it with a cold, repetitive nightmare.

The game is split into two jarringly different cycles:

Action: Fast-paced, brutal, and robotic shootouts where you kill dozens of mobsters, drop your empty gun, grab theirs, and keep moving forward.

Downtime: Walking through museums, sitting in cafes, smoking, and staring at the ceiling in a futile attempt to sleep.

While Ringo is about the anxiety of starting life, Stone Buddha is about the exhaustion of ending it. Both games use repetitive daily routines to make the player physically feel the boredom, loneliness, and psychological weight that their characters carry.

Honestly, I grabbed Fading Afternoon which is the third final game in the series. Fading Afternoon is the thematic and mechanical culmination of developer yeo's existential trilogy, bridging the youthful anxiety of Ringo Ishikawa and the detached oblivion of Stone Buddha. While the previous games explore the start and end of a violent lifestyle, Fading Afternoon focuses on the inevitable decline—the middle-aged transition where a lifetime of violence catches up to you. Someone on here suggested I go back and play the first two so I ended up grabbing the ones on this post.

Definitely the definitive way of enjoying these games in order.

Both The Friends of Ringo Ishikawa and Arrest of a Stone Buddha are existential, atmospheric games created by indie developer yeo. Instead of traditional action games, they function as interactive character studies about aging, futility, and the passage of time.

Lost Ruins (#550)

A 2D side-scrolling survival action game featuring a dark, anime-inspired pixel art style. Players control a young, amnesiac heroine guided by a mysterious mage named Beatrice to defeat the "Dark Lady" sealed within a dangerous castle dungeon. Unlike fast-paced titles in the genre, it blends Metroidvania level layouts with slow, survival horror mechanics.

No Stat Leveling: Character growth relies entirely on discovering superior weapons, magic spells, and equipment.

Resource Scarcity: Save points do not restore health or mana, forcing reliance on limited consumables.

Accessory Synergy: Equipable items provide vital passive buffs, element immunities, or health regeneration.

The game takes roughly 6 to 8 hours to complete. It features three distinct story endings (Bad, Good, and Best). Achieving the optimal endings requires completing specific side quests, such as avoiding opening any golden chests until late in the campaign. Beating the game unlocks new playable modes, including one where you control three boss antagonists simultaneously.

Nothing kind of lives up to the OG Metroid and Castlevania but some come real dang close. This one is one of many who do.

Star Ocean! The Second Story R (#549)

Beautiful cutscenes and story! A full remake of the 1998 PlayStation classic, released on November 2, 2023. The game follows dual protagonists, Claude C. Kenny and Rena Lanford. Your choice of protagonist influences the story's perspective, which allies you can recruit, and the potential for up to 99 different endings based on character relationships.

Real-time battles are faster and more strategic, introducing a "Break" mechanic to stun enemies and "Assault Actions" that let bench characters jump in for assist moves.

A deep skill system allows characters to master "Specialties" like cooking, alchemy, fishing, and musical performance, which are essential for crafting ultimate equipment.

Dialogue choices during PAs influence "Friendship Ratings," which determine character chemistry and combat synergy.

These ratings ultimately decide which of the nearly 100 ending variations you see, ranging from romantic pairings to lifelong friendships.

Modern additions include fast travel, full voice acting in English and Japanese, and the ability to toggle between the original and rearranged soundtracks by Motoi Sakuraba.

Bother First departure and second story are highly recommend switch remasters.

Super Mario 35th Anniversary Carrying Case

Went out of my way to find one of them. I'll wait a bit for the 40th anniversary case to come down in price and then Go after it. Eventually people will stop looking for it and it'll come down to a reasonable price. Same thing happened with the 35th anniversary case. Now it's back down to a fair price. Comes in a nice switch case that holds 8 games. Still sealed so I'll keep it that way since I have other cases that hold more.

Final Fantasy Theatrythm: Final Bar Line (#548)

As a Final Fantasy collector, anything with FInal Fantasy on it, I'm buying. Have the first two on the 3DS physically too. However ,the developers have stated that Final Bar Line is intended to be the final entry in the Theatrhythm series.

Sucks, game isn't a bad series. Fun take on rhythm games.

This standard release includes 385 songs. The three Season Passes for Theatrhythm Final Bar Line expand the game's library by 90 tracks. Unlike the base game, which focuses exclusively on Final Fantasy, the DLC introduces music from other iconic Square Enix franchises like Chrono Trigger, NieR, and Kingdom Hearts.

Vol. 1: (30 Tracks)

OSTs: SaGa, LIVE A LIVE, TWEWY, NieR:Automata

Track Examples: "Megalomania", "Weight of the World", "Twister"

Vol. 2 (30 Tracks)

OSTs: NieR Replicant, Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Mana

Track Examples: "Radical Dreamers", "Robo's Theme", "Wind Scene"

Vol. 3 (30 Tracks)

OSTs: SaGa, Mana, Xenogears, Octopath Traveler, FFXVI

Track Examples: "Battle at Journey's End", "Title Screen" (SaGa)

Digital Deluxe Upgrade includes 27 special tracks that are not part of any Season Pass. These are primarily rearrangements of Final Fantasy classics. Crazy digital upgrade model they got going on here.

To own every song available in the game, you need the content from all three seasons plus the Deluxe exclusives.

Standard Game: 385 Tracks

Deluxe Exclusive Tracks: 27 Tracks

Season Passes 1–3: 90 Tracks

Grand Total: 502 Tracks

$59.97 for upgrade pack and season 1

$99 for upgrade pack + Season 1-3

Kind of what caused me to stay away from it for a while. I think they may still have the $99 upgrade on sale at the eShop for $29.99. might've ended this month already.

Hyperdevotion Noire: Goddess Black Heart (Import Multi-Language English Cover) (#547)

Tactical role-playing game (SRPG) spin-off from the Hyperdimension Neptunia franchise. Released for the PlayStation Vita and pc, it shifts the series' focus to Noire (the goddess Black Heart) and changes the core gameplay from standard JRPG exploration to turn-based grid combat.

While the game was ported to the Switch in early 2025, it did not receive a native North American physical retail release. Instead, an English-language physical version was released for the Asian market, which can be imported to the U.S. and played on any Switch console because they are region-free.

The game was reportedly denied both digital and physical releases in the West due to content that did not comply with Nintendo's internal guidelines regarding risque or suggestive themes. This follows a broader trend where several Neptunia titles, including the Re;Birth trilogy, were initially canceled for Western Switch release due to these policy changes.

The goddesses must unite to defeat this new threat and reclaim their powers by recruiting "generals," who are personifications of famous game franchises like Final Fantasy or Metal Gear Solid.

The game is built around isometric grid combat similar to Final Fantasy Tactics or Disgaea.

Lily Boost System: When characters use skills while standing next to allies, they receive a "smooch" that lowers the skill's cost and increases its power. This also builds Lily Ranks, which represent the affinity between characters.

HDD Mode: With enough Lily Points (LP), goddesses can transform into their Hard Drive Divinity forms (like Black Heart) for three turns, gaining massive stat boosts.

Sim Noire: A hub mode where you play as Noire's faceless "Secretary". You can upgrade her room, answer requests from citizens, and participate in event scenes that develop her relationship with you.

I'm a huge fan of the Neptunia series so I'll eat most of them up....except the riders vs dogwood game. Looks very jank and spin off is too far off from mainline games.

Bubble Bobble 4 Friends: The Baron is Back! (#546)

Online Rankings: Unlike the launch version, this edition includes online leaderboards to compare scores globally.

Included Original Game: The package also contains the original 1986 Bubble Bobble arcade game, complete with its 100 classic levels

Otoko Cross: Naked Remix 2 (Import EU Cover) (#545)

Added to collection. Looked kinda like decent shovelware.

Published with PEGI rating (mostly in Europe) and includes a branded capacitive stylus for use in handheld mode, particularly for the puzzle mechanics.

Focuses on clearing paths for 9 different "otokonoko" (crossdressing) characters, earning points, unlocking outfits, and creating custom dioramas in the Dressing Room mode.

This compilation is designed as a definitive, adult-only collector's edition for fans of the East Asiasoft- developed series.

I mean...yeah. Includes "nude materials" and images direct from the creators designed to bypass limitations on digital console stores. Only way to get the true complete experience is through physical. Comes with two of the games "Pretty" Series in one cart. Rated M. Very few games get that prestige title.

u/RnH_21 — 16 days ago

Remaster of a PlayStation 1 Classic. Adds a rewind feature and the ability to save anywhere.Bonus Content Includes a digital museum filled with rare development documents, original packaging, and classic advertisements. Restores the original Japanese soundtrack and supports multiple languages, including English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish.

Unlike the first one that was 2D Metroidvania style ish...This sequel fully transitions the series into 3D environments while keeping the structured, perspective-shifting pathways of the first game. It expands the quest formula with character suits that grant magical abilities (like flying or swimming)...and a sidekick to help.

A nice LRG release. A nice 3D platformer from the 90s era. Tomba now complete on Switch.

u/RnH_21 — 17 days ago

Didn't want to wait for the LRG version and the Playasia version was cheaper anyway. Have 1-3 now complete on the switch. Only thing that sucks is 3 being a non English cover and spine. Probably replace the spine anyway.

Game is famous for its "Double Feature Scenario," offering two distinct, full-length campaigns (Emma or Alisa) based on a pivotal decision early on, allowing players to explore different sides of the same conflict.

Turn based tactical RPG. Slower paced than a normal RPG so it's either your thing or just avoided all together. Myself, I love RPGs, so I'll take anything and everything in RPG form. With tactical RPG's being closer to board games, I can see where some might not like it. Definitely a PlayStation era classic to play.

u/RnH_21 — 19 days ago

It's been effing 13 years since the last one. Still have my 3DS copy. Can't wait for my kids to give this one a go.

The series traces back to a Game Boy Color title called Ham Tarot and an unreleased project titled Otona no Onna no Uranai Techō (Fortune-telling Notebook for Adult Women).

During development, Nintendo executives liked the game's avatar creation tool so much that the team was briefly reassigned to implement it as the "Mii Channel" for the Wii console.

I guess we can count MiiTopia as kind of a spin-off series of this but this would be an official straight followup to the 3DS. Would pick up the old school DS one but It was never localized outside of Japan because the Miis' voice synthesis software was specifically designed for Japanese phonemes and could not accurately replicate English at the time.

Flooded with rogue lite and metroidvania games, hard to stand out. This one does just that. Stands out. Tons of effort put into this one. Dodge most of these metroidvania style games since they all look alike with gimmick mechanics that are hit or miss. This one just hits right.

You can merge elemental powers like fire, ice, thunder, and wind with your weapons and spells to create unique offensive variations. 33 main weapons.39 sub-weapons.100 relics with unique effects.15 different classes to customize your play style before each run.

Originally Japan Exclusive mobile games seeing it's first release in 2007. The world got its first taste in 2011 with Alphadia 1. Pretty interesting that these were debuted as mobile games and then upgraded to modern consoles starting with 3 digitally.

I originally thought they were Sega Genesis or Turbo Graffix Rpgs, so I kinda dodged them. Alphadia series, at the moment, are only on Mobile and digital on modern consoles. With it being only 1-3 released digitally at the moment. No physical versions yet if the original 1-5 "Core Series".

Alphadia 1 debuted in 2007 with a smartphone release outside Japan in 2011 and Alphadia 2 released in 2008 with a smartphone release outside Japan in 2012.

There are still 3 other entries that haven't been remastered or bundled for modern consoles. Alphadia 3 (JPN 2009)(Worldwide 2025), Alphadia 4 (JPN 2010), and Alphadia 5 (JPN 2011). Pretty sure we'll see the Alphadia 4 release worldwide this year 2026 or 2027 on mobile phones and consoles.

Original 1-5 named "The Core Series", this post is the "Genesis" series. It acts as the Prequel to Alphadia Core Series. Which numerically would be Alphadia 6 & 7 in release order but 0 and 0 part 2 as prequels.

Neo Series would be number 8 and the most current one released on mobile 2022 and consoles 2023 digitally. Looked at as a standalone title but expands on IV's Energi Crystal concept. Pretty cool Rpg series I ran into. Worth a play.

u/RnH_21 — 22 days ago

4th main entry to the Jaleco franchise. Used to rent those bad boys for the SNES growing up. Not bad beat em ups after you milked the living daylights out of Final Fight, Streets of Rage and TMNT Turtles in Time.

Rival Turf!, Brawl Brothers and Peacekeepers were the first three entries. This one on the switch 2 being the forth. I believe The first 3 Rushing Beat entries are on the Nintendo Switch Online Super Nintendo App.ofnyiubwant to try the original SNES games on the series before playing this 4th one.

GoldenEye looking FPS + Arcade Shooter style + Horror Survival Game. Yes please! Cokes with manual, stickers and soundtrack download code. Sealed still so not pictured. Awesome looking PS2 era looking game.

u/RnH_21 — 24 days ago

Last of the switch games I needed to complete the Mana series on the switch. Spin-off of a 1999 PlayStation 1 game. It was the 4th entry to the series.

The only one remaining to be remastered physically in a Nintendo console would be the one released after this one. Dawn of Mana released in 2007 on the PlayStation 2.

I also have Children of Mana on DS but missing Heroes of Mana to complete the DS Mana collection in that console.

Also missing the GBA Sword of Mana which was surprisingly left out of the Collection of Mana on switch.

Really don't want to go backwards collecting physical versions of games before the GBA now. Sticking to GBA, DS, 3DS, and Switch for the moment. Heavily in the RPG genre. Highly recommend the Mana series.
