I had an episode of shingles during LC

I came down with shingles as I was at the beginning of an extended episode of long covid. I ended up bedridden for 5 weeks that time. Apparently this has a lot to do with some pretty bad symptoms related to acetylcholine reduction from the SITH-1 protein.

The Alzheimer’s drug donepezil is being studied for this condition, but there are already natural remedies available that work even better than donepezil to reduce the AChE enzyme.

Also the amino acid L-Lysine has been shown to inhibit the herpesvirus in the body.

<--- The following is an edited excerpt of the study on herbs for AChE inhibition to treat LC.

The study is at:

https://www.mdpi.com/1420-3049/21/9/1161

The extracts of Berberis bealei Carrière, Berberidaceae (Shi Da Gong Lao),

Coptis chinensis Franch, Ranunculaceae (Huang Lian)

and Phellodendron chinense Scheid., Rutaceae (Huang Bai)

Out of the 80 herbs tested these 3 showed the highest inhibition of AChE activity.

We were able to show that three of the TCM plants, which contain isoquinoline alkaloids, substantially inhibited AChE. The most remarkable finding was that the alkaloid containing methanol extract of Coptis chinensis showed a 100-fold more powerful AChE inhibition than galantamine.

--->

Also there is Huperzine A...

<--- The following is an edited Brave search summary on Huperzine A.

Huperzine A is a potent, selective, and reversible acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitor .

It exhibits approximately 900-fold selectivity for AChE over butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE), a higher specificity than the prescription drug donepezil (~500-fold).

huperzine A is approximately 8-fold more potent than donepezil in elevating cortical acetylcholine levels on a molar basis.

The donepezil study is at:

https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/pharmacology/articles/10.3389/fphar.2026.1807203/full

<--- The following is an edited Brave search summary on how to raise choline levels in your body:

Choline-Rich Foods include egg yolks, liver, salmon, beef, milk, quinoa, edamame, and cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower.

Supplementation of

Alpha-GPC or Citicoline (CDP-Choline) to cross the blood-brain barrier.

Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALCAR) also aids synthesis by providing acetyl groups.

Caffeine: Moderate consumption of coffee or tea can boost cholinergic activity and acetylcholine levels.

Vitamin D and vitamin B5, which supports acetylcholine synthesis.

Regular activity increases blood flow and stimulates acetylcholine production in the brain.

Getting 7-8 hours of restful sleep is critical for maintaining healthy neurotransmitter levels and cognitive function.

Certain nootropics and herbs act as acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, preventing the enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine from degrading it. These include:

Huperzine-A

Bacopa Monnieri

Ginkgo Biloba

Ashwagandha

Gotu Kola

Avoid excessive intake of anticholinergic medications (such as certain antihistamines or drugs for depression/insomnia), which can block acetylcholine activation.

Long Covid Symptoms

First thing is I’m not a doctor and I don’t give medical advice, I’m just looking for a way to make myself whole again.

I have had covid twice, and have been extremely ill with long covid for the past 6+ years.

I have been looking for answers anywhere I can find them. I found this information on vitamin B1 deficiency that seems to correlate directly with many of the long covid symptoms that people are describing.

The article recommends IV treatment for thiamine. Regular thiamine is water-soluble and when taken orally isn’t absorbed very well and “generally” doesn’t absorb into nerve tissue or cross the blood brain barrier. Though, there is benfotiamine, a fat-soluble synthetic form of vitamin B1 that does both cross the blood brain barrier and is absorbed into nerve tissue quite readily.

The article describes two conditions, three actually, one is beriberi and the other is Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome that if left untreated can turn into Korsakoff’s psychosis.

As described all of these conditions are from “chronic” deficiency, and not from “having the flu” like getting covid and suddenly getting what looks like beriberi or Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, making doctors dismiss any such diagnosis or association with your symptoms. But. There is one association that is interesting,

(A more common manifestation of thiamin deficiency in the United States is Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome [2]. This disorder is about 8–10 times more common in people with chronic alcoholism than in the general population, “but it can also develop in patients who have severe gastrointestinal disorders”)”

Covid is known to cause severe microbiome damage. Could this possibly lead to a rapid and “acute” B1 deficiency? Not sure but it seems like a good correlation for more study.

Out of the gargantuan number of supplements I have tried for LC, benfotiamine has been a life saver for me.

I’m not a doctor and I don’t give medical advice. But I do have a brain and can put 2 & 2 together.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Excerpts from the article, the link is at the bottom.

Thiamin deficiency

In its early stage, thiamin deficiency can cause

weight loss and anorexia,

confusion,

short-term memory loss,

and other mental signs and symptoms;

muscle weakness;

and cardiovascular symptoms (such as an enlarged heart) [7].

The most common effect of thiamin deficiency is beriberi, which is characterized mainly by peripheral neuropathy and wasting [1-3].

People with this condition have impaired sensory, motor, and reflex functions.

In rare cases, beriberi causes congestive heart failure that leads to edema in the lower limbs and, occasionally, death [1,3].

Although beriberi is rare in the United States and other developed countries, people in these countries do occasionally develop the condition [15-18]. Administration of supplemental thiamin, often parenterally, quickly cures beriberi [2,3].

A more common manifestation of thiamin deficiency in the United States is Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome [2]. This disorder is about 8–10 times more common in people with chronic alcoholism than in the general population,

but it can also develop in patients who have severe gastrointestinal disorders,

Wernicke’s encephalopathy, is usually characterized by peripheral neuropathy [3,19].

Without treatment, up to 20% of people with Wernicke’s encephalopathy die; those who survive develop Korsakoff’s psychosis, although some people with Korsakoff’s psychosis have not previously had Wernicke’s encephalopathy [20,21]. Korsakoff’s psychosis, an effect of chronic thiamin deficiency, is associated with

severe short-term memory loss,

disorientation, and

confabulation (confusion between real and imagined memories) [1-3].

Terry Carmen, Bupkis dot org website is online...

In a post here about a year ago I said I would host his site on my new VPS server. Well.... it took much longer than I anticipated at the time to get everything setup. I completely rebuilt the site using just html and css so it should be pretty snappy. I already had the domain that I was going to use for a future project but this seems like a good use for it. Let me know if you find any errors. site is at hungryworld.cafe

CSS electric fire

Not sure if I'm aloud to post links to my own site?

I am learning web development, mainly HTML and CSS and I found this card with the electric border while looking for things made with only CSS.

https://codepen.io/BalintFerenczy/pen/KwdoyEN

I thought it was a pretty cool looking effect.

Not very useful but that didn't stop me from seeing what I could do with it.

Initially I just changed a couple of things and made this: https://thisistheway.one

But what I really wanted was to make a divider with it and ended up with this: https://thisistheway.one/divider-index.html
