Ways to access the point of interest map outside of games?

The most interesting part of Ingress and Pokemon Go, for me, came from the crowdsourced "point of interest" map. I'd hoped playing these games would help me engage with the local area more on my maps. In reality, though, the incentive structure of these games pushes in the opposite direction.

So I'm wondering: If I wanted to just access the point of interest map -- nothing else -- is there a way to do that? (My dream version would be some map that would allow me to mark given spots as visited, stamping a virtual passport of sorts, with no other notable gamification.) Thought this subreddit might be a place where folks would know the answers and limitations.

What's the community like in Utah?

So, I may start playing. Just wondering if there's an active community in Utah and, if so, what faction is dominant in Utah (Utah Valley and SLC area). And for that matter, whether it's more rewarding to play as the dominant faction or as the underdog.
