Early potty training?
My girl is just over 17 months. (First time mom, so I also have no idea what I'm doing haha)
We have several board books in our rotation that discuss potty training, and she has taken a real interest in it. She follows me into the bathroom when I'm using the toilet and says "pee potty," "poop potty," "byebye pee," and "byebye poop" in correct situations. She has also been announcing "pee" and "poop" a few minutes before going in her diaper (not always, but often). However, after she goes, she has never seemed uncomfortable with the sensation or sought me out to intentionally get her diaper changed. She sometimes wakes up dry from naps, but I haven't really tracked the length of time that she's dry on a day-to-day basis.
This week we bought a toddler potty just to have around the house for her to explore and get used to it. Yesterday she said "pee" several times and insisted on sitting on the potty. She didn't actually pee in the potty, but she sat on it for 20min while we read books about potty training. When I got her in a fresh diaper and dressed because I had to do some other things around the house, she sat back down on the potty (fully clothed) and continued flipping through the books on her own.
I have next week off work, so I guess we're going to give pull-ups a try and see if she really wants to use the potty. I'm not planning to do any intensive potty training at this stage, just follow her lead and let her use the potty if and when she wants to.
Our daycare and family/friends keep telling me that it's far too early for potty training... But if I go into this without putting any pressure or expectations on her, I don't see how there's any harm in following my daughter's lead and letting her use the potty when she wants to.
Anyone else here with a kid that took an interest in potty training so early? If it was with a sibling who is now older, how did it work out?
