Is an IDE absolutely needed for java development?

Hello.

Edit: I've decided it's probably best to use an IDE either way.

Whenever I search for the best Java compilers, I've only founds sites listing the best IDE.

Is there a way to keep java development minimal? Can I just use vim and a java compiler like you can with C?

I'm very inexperienced when it comes to Java.

Thank you in advance.

Is it worth while to use libc?

I've been wondering this for quite some time now.

For Linux development, is it worth creating basic read/write functions in asm, and writing everything else in C?

Does most open source software use functions from the standard C library? What are the benefits of both approaches?

Edit: I would be using Arm64 assembly.

Thank you in advance.

Executable confusion

This problem has been solved.

Hello.

I've discovered that when I download an executable and try to run it, it doesn't run. My desktop environment (Xfce4) just asks me what I want to open it with.

Software I compile myself (with GCC) also does not run properly. I'll call it from my terminal, and it will do something unexpected.

I'm very confused. Software installed through Pacman works fine. What do I need to install in order to run software downloaded from the internet?

Thank you in advance.

AUR package security

Hello.

Some of the terminology I'll be using here may be incorrect. I'm very inexperienced in this area.

I've heard that one of the best ways to check the safety of a project in the AUR is to look through it's PKGBUILD file. But, what do you actually look for? What are the red flags?

Thank you in advance.

GAS assembler questions

Hello.

I've been learning the GAS assembler syntax, and have made some decent progress. However, I'm still very inexperienced, and have experienced difficulties finding answers to these two questions:

  1. For Linux, is there some sort of way to read input from a terminal without searching for a specific string/command? Basically, I'd like to take the input of whatever the user types (nothing specific), and store those ASCII values somewhere (later, I'd like to parse them).
  2. Assembly and C can only function together because of object files. What is the equivalent of function parameters in C for assembly?

Thank you very much in advance.

Assembly question

Assembly beginner here.

I've done some research, but I am still confused.

Hopefully this fits inside of the Linux questions subreddit. I didn't know where else to post this.

If you use the GAS assembler, does your program need to set up the stack? Or, is that handled by the Linux kernel? After _start: , can you just begin your program and let the kernel handle that? Or is this something I need to worry about?

Thank you in advance.

Difficulties with a USB stick file system

Hello. I've been trying to set up udisks for a few hours.

For some context, the USB stick was formatted by a mac earlier. When I ran sudo fdisk -l on Arch Linux, I saw my USB stick here:

Disk /dev/sda: 57.3 GiB, 61524148224 bytes, 120164352 sectors Disk model: SanDisk 3.2Gen1 Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes Disklabel type: dos Disk identifier: 0x00000000.

However, when I run sudo lsblk -f, I only see something like this:

nvme0n1 │ ├─nvme0n1p1 │ vfat FAT32 ├─nvme0n1p2 │ ext4 1.0 └─nvme0n1p3 │ crypto 2 └─lvm │ LVM2_m LVM2 ├─volgroup0-lv_root │ ext4 1.0 └─volgroup0-lv_home ext4 1.0

I am not logged into the root. And, to the best of my knowledge, my USB stick is not mounted yet. I know I probably need to reformat it, but I'm not sure exactly what the next step is. Is it safe to reformat it? What file system do I reformat it to? Thank you very much in advance.
