The day I found out ‘fixin’ to’ was a Southern thing

I was at my friend’s wedding in Iowa. Her dad and his family were originally from Wisconsin, and we were all dancing, drinking, and having a good time.
At some point, her dad comes running up to me and says, “I need you to do me a favor. I need you to go over here to this table and tell my friends you’re fixin’ to go do something.”
I was like, “WTF, okay?” 😂
So I walked over to the table and said, “I’m fixin’ to have to run to the store because we’re running low on beer around here.”
They absolutely LOST IT.
Apparently, “fixin’ to” is a Southern thing.
I had lived my entire life thinking everybody said it.

The lesson I used to roll my eyes at is one I still carry today.

**Life lessons taught early on that still stick around**
Every day of my high school career, I had a vice principal, Ms. Williams to be exact, who made the daily announcements over the intercom.
After every briefing, she would end with the same words:
**“And remember, make it a great day, or not… the choice is yours.”**
To this day, I can still hear all of us repeating it in our sassy teenage voices, complete with the eye rolls and teenage attitude.
Back then, it was just something Ms. Williams always said.
I don’t think any of us really stopped to think about it.
But man… what a powerful statement.
Years later, I understand it in a completely different way.
We don’t get to choose everything that happens to us. Some days are going to suck. Some things are going to be completely outside of our control.
But we do get some say in what we do with the day we’ve been given.
It’s funny how the little things stick with us.
I don’t remember every announcement Ms. Williams made over that intercom. I don’t remember what most of them were even about.
But I remember that sentence.
And somewhere along the way, the thing we used to repeat with sarcastic teenage voices became an actual life lesson.
So, wherever you are, Ms. Williams… thank you.
**Make it a great day, or not. The choice is yours.**

My Biology teacher taught us the meaning of FUCK… and accidentally left it on the whiteboard.

I had a Biology teacher who slept through most of our classes. Then one day, he woke up and decided to teach us the meaning of the word FUCK.
I believe it was my 10th-grade year, and I had the pleasure of having a retiring Biology teacher that year. I would say the year was 2004, maybe even 2006-ish… ANYWAYS.
Mr. Hawkins slept through most of his classes and had a whole drawer full of kids from over the years who had slept in his class.
I distinctly remember the day like it was yesterday.
He seemed to be a little more awake and attentive that day as we stumbled in before the bell rang. As we sat down, I remember him getting a dry-erase marker out and proceeding to write, in HUGE letters, the word:
F. U. C. K.
He said, “All day long I watch all y’all walk by my room and it’s ‘fuck this, fuck that.’ I just feel like today you should learn the meaning behind the word fuck.”
If you have made it this long, I know the anticipation is overwhelming…
Under each letter, he wrote the meaning of each word in the word itself:
F — Fornication
U — Under
C — Cardinal
K — Knowledge
Now, do I remember what century this was started? Or even what that had to do with anything?
Nah.
What I DO remember, though, is that after his speech was over, we discovered the marker that was supposed to be a dry-erase marker was actually a permanent marker.
And the word FUCK wouldn’t come off the whiteboard.
