Stood up for my sibling at dinner and now everyone is annoyed with me

I was at a family dinner last week when my older brother made a backhanded comment about my sibling’s career choice. It wasn’t even a big deal, just one of those little digs that had been happening for a while. I ended up jumping in right away, saying something about how it was a solid choice and that we should be happy for them. The table went quiet for a second and then everyone kind of looked at me like I had made it awkward. Later my sibling texted me saying they appreciated it but also that it kind of escalated the vibe. I’m still glad I said something in the moment, but now a couple of relatives keep bringing it up like I turned nothing into something. Not sure if I was wrong for stepping in or if I should have just let it slide.
