A must-watch for anyone associated with the Isha Foundation past or present : Unveiling Andrew Cohen - How I Created A Cult - S01 EP01 - Cult Documentary

While this documentary focuses on Andrew Cohen, the parallels to Sadhguru and the Isha Foundation are difficult to ignore. From the systematic grooming of followers and the demand for absolute obedience, to the creation of an untouchable, larger-than-life persona, this episode acts as a mirror. It perfectly illustrates how modern spiritual cult leaders or "Self Proclaimed Gurus" use identical tactics to build absolute power, exploit devotion, and mask deeply toxic environments under the guise of enlightenment. Whether you are still following Isha Foundation or Sadhguru or have already left, this is an insightful documentary covering the blueprint of psychological control in modern spiritual cults.

Hotstar’s new series "Hunkaar" tells the story of an abusive godman exposed by his victim. Interestingly, the series portrays the false guru's manipulative practices & cult activities in a way that is strikingly similar to allegations leveled by ex-followers against Sadhguru

Found this video of Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar where he teaches that "knowledge is for growing spiritually and not for exhibition". But isn't it contrary that AOL makes Intution Process kids do an exhibition of their knowledge all the time!?

Can anyone here share more about the connection between Maharishi Mahesh Yogi & Sri Sri Ravi Shankar ? Was Sri Sri Ravi Shankar teaching Sahaj Samadhi meditation & Sudarshan Kriya in the TM movement ? Why doesn't the TM mention Sri Sri as Maharishi's disciple on their official website ?

Has anyone else had bad experiences or felt negative symptoms after meditating? (Looking for shared experiences based on Cheetah House research)

Hi everyone,

I’ve been reading about the research from an organization called Cheetah House. They look at the difficult, painful, or distressing experiences people can have from meditating.

While meditation is usually called a great tool for relaxing and stress relief, their research shows it can sometimes cause problems for your nervous system.

They list many symptoms split into 7 main categories. I want to know if anyone here has experienced any of these and can share in comments:

  • The Affective Domain (Changes in Feelings): Experiencing Affective Flattening [feeling completely numb or emotionally blank], Affective Lability [sudden, intense mood swings], unexplained Fear or Panic, or Re-experiencing of Traumatic Memories [old painful memories coming back out of nowhere].
  • The Cognitive Domain (Changes in Thinking): Experiencing a Change in Executive Functioning [having a hard time making decisions, focusing, or remembering things], Increased Cognitive Processing [racing thoughts], or Disintegration of Conceptual Meaning [looking at an everyday object but your brain forgets what it means or is used for].
  • The Somatic Domain (Body Problems): Experiencing Involuntary Movements [unwanted body twitching, shaking, or tics], Sleep Changes [severe insomnia], Cardiac Changes [a racing or irregular heartbeat], or Energy-Like Somatic Experiences [feeling strange vibrations or currents moving through your body].
  • The Perceptual Domain (Changes in Senses): Experiencing Derealization [feeling like the world around you is fake, dreamlike, or behind a fog], Perceptual Hypersensitivity [suddenly finding normal lights and everyday sounds way too loud and painful], or Distortions in Time or Space.
  • The Sense of Self Domain (Losing Your Identity): Experiencing a Change in Sense of Embodiment [feeling like you are floating outside or disconnected from your physical body], a Loss of Sense of Agency [feeling like your thoughts or movements do not belong to you], or a Loss of Sense of Basic Self [feeling like you do not even exist].
  • The Conative Domain (Loss of Motivation): Experiencing Anhedonia or Avolition [completely losing interest in your favorite hobbies, or losing all drive and motivation to work toward your life goals].
  • The Social Domain (Life and Relationship Issues): Experiencing Occupational Impairment [having trouble doing your job], Social Impairment [struggling to connect with family and friends], or difficulties with Integration Following Retreat [finding it very hard to return to normal daily life after a silent meditation retreat].

If you have gone through any of these things:

  1. What was your practice technique/style? (For example: using an app, doing guided meditations, doing unguided or open meditations, doing meditations after kriya or breathing excercises or going to silent retreats?)
  2. How did it start? Did it happen slowly over months of daily practice, or did it start suddenly during or right after a retreat?
  3. What actually helped you feel normal again? Did you have to stop meditating completely? Did physical exercises, changing your habits, or talking to a doctor help you recover?

Thank you for sharing your stories. I think it is important to talk about the difficult sides of meditation openly.

Check this out for the detailed list of negative symptos of meditation documented by Cheetah House research:

An Explanation of the Exploitative Manipulation Patterns in Modern Commercial Spirituality Cults

To understand how these manipulation mechanics function in practice, we can analyze the defensive strategies of a fictionalized global movement, "The Misha Foundation," led by a charismatic, bearded mystic known as "The RaddGuru."

The movement frequently organizes a high-priced "Summit of the Skies"—a spiritual tour into a high-mountain region notoriously prone to extreme weather, low oxygen, and landslides.

The following examples demonstrate how the group’s defensive apparatus utilizes the BITE model to protect "The RaddGuru" when casualties occur on the trail, mirroring the precise arguments used by high-control organizations.

1. Information Control: The "Sanitized Memory" Strategy

Before the mountain tour, the RaddGuru explicitly states in video broadcasts: "Nature answers to the energy of the enlightened. If you walk under my canopy, the mountain cannot touch you. I know the fabric of creation better than the architect who drew it. Not a single follower joining me on this summit will be left behind. I will not let them die"

When multiple travelers die due to exposure, landslides and altitude sickness, the Information Control apparatus reacts:

  • The Omission: In official forums, all links to the broadcast are removed. Followers writing summaries of the tragedy completely omit the RaddGuru's claims of supreme cosmic knowledge, promises and powers to protect his followers from harm.
  • The Pivot: If a critic posts the original quote, followers flood the comments saying, "You are taking a deeply profound metaphor literally. Things like landslides and natural disasters happen. Masters in the past have faced same situation where they did not intervene. To reduce Raddguru's cosmic wisdom to mere physical safety shows your spiritual ignorance." By omitting the literal promise, they rewrite the leader's failed prediction into a flawless spiritual lesson.

2. Behavior Control: The "Enforced Reverence" Tactic

When families demand an inquiry into why the tour group was marched into a storm without adequate medical equipment, the group controls behavior through public shaming and strict emotional positioning.

  • The Dialogue: A critic posts online: "The Misha Foundation needs to be held accountable for ignoring weather warnings, geo-climatic risk factors and making false promises of supernatural protection."
  • The Defensive Reaction: Followers reply in identical, aggressive fragments: "Show some respect to the victims! Is this the right time to ask these questions? The bodies have not even been found yet! Keep quiet and respect the departed. Your post is insensitive and is in bad taste"
  • The Behind-the-Scenes Contradiction: While the followers successfully weaponize this narrative to ban public inquiry, the RaddGuru waits not at all. Behind the scenes, the organization aggressively launches new monetized video series, rolls out expensive spiritual registration programs, and introduces new financial schemes exploiting the sudden spike in community attention.
  • The Mechanism: This behavior control creates a double standard. The critics are physically and socially barred from speaking under the guise of solemnity, while the leadership is free to immediately capitalize on the tragedy financially.

3. Emotion Control: The "Vibrational Guilt" Lever

Inside the movement, doubt is treated as a contagious psychological disease. The group manages the emotional states of its members by twisting empathy into guilt.

  • The Dialogue: An internal member confesses in a private group: "I feel heartbroken and confused. The RaddGuru said he would protect them. Why did they die?"
  • The Defensive Reaction: Senior members reply: "By harboring anger and pointing fingers at the Guide, you are generating toxic, low-vibrational energy. You are choosing resentment over love. Are you trying to ruin the spiritual alignment of this entire community? Uplift yourself and project peace, or you will pull everyone down. Are you adding to the noise and chaos or bringing joy and compassion"
  • The Mechanism: The member’s genuine grief and confusion are weaponized against them. They are made to feel personally responsible for damaging the group's collective emotional environment. To escape the overwhelming guilt of being a "negative influence," the member suppresses their doubt and publicly joins the defense of the leader.

4. Thought Control: The "Cosmic Plan" Thought-Stopper

When logic dictates that the leader made a false promise, the group introduces a thought-stopping cliché that completely halts rational analysis.

  • The Dialogue: A journalist asks: "If the RaddGuru knows more than the Divine, why didn't he foresee the landslide?"
  • The Defensive Reaction: The group releases a statement: "The RaddGuru operates on a multi-dimensional plane. What the mundane human mind perceives as a tragedy is actually a deliberate, glorious liberation orchestrated at a higher karmic level. The RaddGuru’s vision looks millions of years ahead; your microscopic logic cannot grasp the vastness of the evolutionary leap those souls just took."
  • The Mechanism: This is the ultimate thought-control mechanism. It creates a closed loop where the leader can never fail. A successful trip proves his power; a fatal trip also proves his power, just on a level "too advanced" for ordinary humans to understand. The mind stops analyzing the physical facts and surrenders to the abstract dogma.

Understanding the BITE Model

The BITE Model is a widely recognized tool for identifying psychological manipulation. Developed by cult expert Steven Hassan, it breaks down the four main methods high-control groups use to strip away a person's free will:

  • Behavior Control – Regulating your physical actions, clothing, and daily routines.
  • Information Control – Limiting what you can read, see, or hear to prevent critical thinking.
  • Thought Control – Teaching you to instantly shut down your own doubts or logical questions.
  • Emotion Control – Using fear, shame, and overwhelming guilt to keep you loyal.

Essentially, if a group or leader controls what you do, see, think, and feel, they control you.

Common Warning Signs of a High-Control Group

Recognizing these patterns early can help individuals protect their autonomy before deep psychological manipulation takes root.

  • Absolute Authoritarianism: The leader claims a unique, unquestionable path to truth or divine authority. Their commands, predictions, or promises are treated as absolute law, and they are immune to criticism or peer review.
  • Aggressive Defensiveness: The community treats honest, logical questioning as a malicious assault. Investigators, journalists, or even grieving family members seeking accountability are instantly labeled as "enemies," "haters," or "spiritual polluters."
  • Exploitation of Tragedies: When crises or deaths occur within the group, the leadership immediately capitalizes on the heightened emotional state of the community to launch new programs, request donations, or sell specialized services, often while publicly demanding that others remain silent out of "respect."
  • Systematic Isolation: Followers are subtly or overtly encouraged to cut ties or limit communication with family, friends, or external sources of information that express doubt about the group's practices or the leader's absolute power.

The Psychology of Undue Influence

High-control groups do not recruit by force; they exploit universal human needs for belonging, purpose, and certainty. Understanding the psychological mechanics explains why intelligent individuals can become deeply trapped:

  • Cognitive Dissonance: When a leader’s concrete promise fails (such as predicting absolute safety and failing to deliver), the brain experiences intense discomfort. To resolve this, followers will actively rewrite reality or blame themselves rather than accept that their leader made a false claim.
  • Thought-Stopping Conditioning: Groups train members to use internal clichés—like dismissing valid questions as "toxic noise" or "low vibrations"—to immediately halt their own analytical thinking whenever an uncomfortable truth surfaces.
  • Exploiting Vulnerability: The psychological conditioning deepens during intense, high-stakes experiences (such as high-risk physical journeys or intensive isolation retreats) where physical exhaustion and emotional overwhelm make individuals highly receptive to authority.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar throws shade at Sadhguru's 'Yatra' offerings & 'Teerthakund', says: "True 'gyanis' turn you to look inward. Someone who says you must take a dip somewhere or go on pilgrimage to Kailash Mansarovar, Kedarnath & Badrinath spending lakhs to seek some exclusive 'energy' is foolish."

If someone claims to know better than God, they should at least notice what is right under their nose. If they profess to know the past, present, and future of everyone they meet, they shouldn't be tripping over their own next step.

While the Isha Foundation manages the devastating aftermath of the Kailash Yatra-Nepal tragedy, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar has once again during a live Satsang, dismissed the Adiyogi claims made by Sadhguru as entirely imaginary, directly challenging Sadhguru's knowledge and credibility

Narcissistic cult leaders surround themselves with enablers, not honest people. 🎭👇

This post by NarcGuard on Instagram clearly illustrates how narcissistic leaders maintain an absolute monopoly on the truth within cult dynamics. When former members or skeptics raise valid objections, the leader and their enablers immediately weaponise DARVO and calculated smear campaigns to flip the script, turning the whistleblower into the villain to protect the cult's hierarchy.

Enablers play a crucial role in maintaining narcissistic systems.

Here is the truth about why enablers protect the abuser:

  1. 🚫 Intolerance of Truth Narcissists only keep people around who tolerate, excuse, or applaud their behavior. The exact second you demand accountability, you become an enemy that must be silenced or removed.
  2. DARVO and Smear Campaigns When you speak up, they flip the script. You get blamed, attacked, and accused of the exact toxic behaviors the narcissist is actually committing.
  3. 😨 Fear Over Integrity The people around them often see the manipulation clearly. They don't stay silent because they are blind, they stay silent because they are terrified of becoming the next target.
  4. 🤐 Silence as a Calculated Choice Enablers prioritize their own temporary comfort and safety over standing up for the truth. You will not find protection or justice in an enabling dynamic because their loyalty belongs to self-preservation.

If Sadhguru claims to 'know better than God' when it comes to life, why was he completely helpless to foresee or prevent the tragic Nepal flash floods that hit his own followers? How do Isha followers reconcile Sadhguru's claim with his absolute helplessness during the recent Nepal tragedy?

Watching a visibly and apparently shaken Sadhguru tearing up on camera over the missing pilgrims acts as a sobering, humbling reminder of absolute human limitation. When a sudden, violent natural disaster strikes, spiritual distinctions provide no immunity from physical laws, infrastructure collapse, or geopolitical and bureaucratic barriers to rescue.

If a self-proclaimed spiritual leader claims a perception that supersedes the divine, a complete inability to foresee a devastating event within their immediate inner circle highlights a massive gap between cosmic claims and earthly reality.

Raising this question is not about making light of the tragic natural disaster or what some would call as "act of God."

Instead, it raises an essential critique of public accountability and the boundaries of modern commercial guru culture during a real crisis. Because, at the end of the day, didn't Sadhguru clearly claim he knew better than God?

Sadhguru’s tearful breakdown wasn't just a display of grief; it was the involuntary admission of his own limitations. It proves that his claims of knowing 'better than God' were nothing more than misleading rhetoric uttered in vain. When real crisis hit, the cosmic master was instantly reduced to a helpless bystander, utterly exposed.

ADDENDUM: On Timing, Tone, and Public Accountability

To those commenting that the timing of this post is insensitive, in bad taste, or premature while search-and-rescue operations are ongoing, I want to clarify why this discussion cannot be paused.

  • First, if the standard is that we must maintain complete silence until all victims are recovered, then that rule must apply to everyone equally. Did Jaggi wait? Did the Isha Foundation wait? While the tragedy was actively unfolding, they immediately put Jaggi on a stage in front of global media cameras to broadcast highly detailed, analytical, and logistical statistics about the missing and deceased pilgrims. If the leadership is permitted to step into the public arena right now to actively manage public perception and shape the narrative, it is an absolute double standard to claim that the public cannot simultaneously ask hard questions about institutional accountability.
  • Second, to address the charge that it is cruel to expose a guru’s fraudulence while victims and survivors are actively grieving: if the mere existence of these critical questions is deemed a danger to survivors who might stumble upon them, then by that logic, this entire subreddit (r/SadhguruTruth) should be temporarily deactivated. The fundamental purpose of this platform has always been to openly discuss the manipulation, expose the false claims, and hold this commercial guru culture accountable. We do not pause or hide our views, perspectives or questions about truth because reality has suddenly and tragically validated our exact criticisms.
  • My post does not downplay the immense loss of human or animal life; the devastation in Nepal is a profound tragedy that I think about deeply. But my questions belong to Jaggi, not the victims.

>When a public figure deploys massive, unchecked claims of cosmic enlightenment and divine authority even boasting that they "know better than God" they deliberately strip followers of their natural survival instincts and critical thinking skills. By weaponizing faith, this spiritual leader manipulated vulnerable pilgrims into a state of absolute psychological dependence.

The ultimate betrayal lay in the explicit promise of physical safety, sealed by the famous, declaration made to those undertaking the Kailash yatra with Sadhguru:
"Everyone will come back. I will not let you die."

This is exactly why questioning Jaggi’s response right now is entirely justifiable:

  • The PR Mismatch: A person overwhelmed by spontaneous, uncontrollable grief does not possess the cold composure to read off structured demographic data and analytical metrics to a global audience. True grief overwhelms analytical thinking.
  • The Double Standard of Compassion: Neither Jaggi nor Isha has ever held a press conference or streamed an address to express accountability or guidance when devoted followers quietly take their own lives or report severe psychological harm within the foundation's ecosystem. They stay silent during private tragedies, yet rush to the stage the moment an international disaster threatens their brand.
  • The Cost of False Promises: If earthly safety were their priority, their rhetoric would match reality. They would use standard safety waivers, warning people that the mountains are volatile and unpredictable. Instead, they substituted real-world caution with grand promises of a supernatural safety shield to build their brand.

For a genuinely empathetic leader, human lives matter consistently whether it is one follower's quiet tragedy or a highly publicized international event. It is painful to look at these contradictions in the raw aftermath of a crisis, but it is the only time the public can clearly see the dangerous, real-world consequences of unfulfilled cosmic rhetoric.

Asking "why didn't the promises work?" isn't an act of disrespect to the victims; it is to Asking why a promise failed is an act of accountability, not disrespect to victims, survivors or their friends and relatives, because it seeks the truth to protect others.

Note:

I understand that moderating during this crisis is highly challenging. Please feel free to remove this post either temporarily for future review or permanently if you too feel it is ill-timed or creates too much extra work for the team. Eventually, this topic will come up and people will and should ask these hard questions to unmask the deception and manipulation innocent followers have been misled into.

This post is a structural critique of Sadhguru’s false promises and international PR standards. I do not wish to minimize the pain of the survivors or those close to the victims. I acknowledge that raising these questions can be deeply upsetting, and I sincerely beg the pardon of anyone hurt or upset by my views or questions.

I fully support whatever decision the mods make to protect the credibility of this space and respect their judgment on what is best for the subreddit right now.
