[OC] Which NBA Players Feast on Bad Defenses and Fall Off Against Good Ones?

I compared every 2025–26 player averaging at least 15 points per game against the league’s top-10 and bottom-10 defenses.

Teams were classified using their final full-season defensive rating. The middle ten defenses were excluded, and players needed at least eight games against both groups.

Top-10 defenses: OKC, DET, SAS, BOS, TOR, HOU, NYK, MIN, ATL, PHX
Bottom-10 defenses: WAS, UTA, SAC, MIL, BKN, NOP, IND, MEM, CHI, DEN

Biggest scoring declines

Positive decline means the player scored more per 36 against bottom-10 defenses.

Step 1 scores still used as a filter now that some candidates will just have the "Pass"?

I'm wondering whether Step 1 scores are still going to be used as a filter, given that the candidates applying straight through will have just the "pass" designation. How can you compare candidates who had scored on step 1 vs those without?

Stat-driven Intriguing Trade Targets

Methods

Calling this portion methods is probably a little disrespectful to proper scientific inquiry, but I hope you all enjoy. I basically scraped all of the data from basketball-reference.com by downloading multiple separate excel documents for stats and repeatedly sorting them for particular stats. My goals were to identify players who were forwards, shooters, rebounders and had multiple positive advanced metrics (e.g. win shares/48 min, VORP, box plus minus).

I specifically looked at every single forward, excluded those who played less than 400 minutes, removed those who were well known starters on recently deep playoff teams (New York, Oklahoma, San Antonio, etc). I included players who were taking at least three 3PT attempts per game and hitting more than 37%. Rebounding is something our team has always kind of struggled with, though Naz was starting to show flashes of being more active on the glass this past season. Replacing forward rebounding will be very important.

My Picks

I'm very intrigued by Matkovic of the New Orleans Pelicans. At 6'10" 241 lbs, he's shooting >40% on 3PT attempts and grabbing ~10 rebounds a game. He also records about 2 blocks per game. For pelicans subreddit commentary on him: Here and Here. He is a very fun watch, and was recently locked down on his next contract so I'm not sure what it would take to pry him away - probably Terrence Shannon Jr. at least, maybe even the addition of our last remaining 2nd round pick and/or Rocco Zikarsky as they're probably looking to fit Derik Queen with a spacing 4/5. His fit with Lamelo would also be excellent as he is a massive pick and roll lob threat.

Matkovic Highlights from the Pelicans YouTube channel.

Rounding out the rotation with a back-up forward in this scenario, you may be able to pry away Sam Hauser with the return of Jayson Tatum and a young Jordan Walsh in the wings. If Jaylen Brown doesn't leave, they have quite a bit of forward depth and it may make sense for them to swap Josh Green.

Disclaimer: not a salary cap expert, so not 100% sure whether the swaps I've proposed are feasible.

What do you guys think? What other trade prospects are you guys excited for? I've heard a lot about Mamu, but seems to be unlikely we get him.

P.S. If the Crunch Wears No Pants crew needs a nerdy guest, hit me up. Big fan.
