XGIMI Titan Noir Max: DBLE (dynamic laser dimming) confirmed NOT WORKING on some units on V1.2.54

The "Noir" in Titan Noir Max is carried by three things: the dual iris, the native contrast, and DBLE — the dynamic laser dimming that gets you from 10,000:1 native to the advertised 100,000:1 dynamic. On my unit, one of those three is a toggle connected to a menu animation and nothing else.

I can prove it. And I need your help figuring out how widespread it is.

First: why "I toggled it and saw nothing" is worthless evidence

Before anyone grabs a pitchfork — or worse, comments "works on my machine" after a five-second glance — you need to know that DBLE has **documented soft modes that are by design, not the bug:**

- **Dynamic iris on** → DBLE runs very lightly or not at all. They don't fight each other; DBLE yields.
- **Low laser power** → almost zero dimming headroom left. At laser 3, DBLE is effectively neutralized before it starts.
- **f/7.0 iris** → native contrast is already maxed, so DBLE intervenes softly on purpose.
- The X-Vision chip needs **a few seconds of playing content** to analyze a scene before it acts. A paused frame proves nothing.

If you tested at laser 3, f/7, dynamic iris on — congratulations, you tested the feature in the exact configuration where it's designed to do nothing. I did that too at first. That's not the bug.

## So I brought receipts

I shot professionally for years, so when eyeballing failed me I did what you do: locked camera, controlled test.

**Config:** manual iris f/2.0, laser 10, dynamic iris OFF — maximum dimming headroom, maximum DBLE authority. Black clipping pattern (~99% black frame with gray steps), *playing*, menu closed, 5+ seconds of settle before each capture.

**Camera:** fully locked manual exposure. 1/120 shutter, ISO 100, fixed white balance. The camera cannot lie about a change it's not allowed to compensate for.

**Result — mean pixel values per patch, DBLE on vs off:**

Patch DBLE ON DBLE OFF Delta
255 188.5 185.8 +1.5%
100 117.1 115.5 +1.3%
50 48.4 47.9 +0.9%
45 42.1 41.6 +1.1%
40 38.9 39.1 −0.6%
Black floor 2.00 2.00 0.0%

Every value is inside measurement noise. For reference, a *working* DBLE on this frame should crush those near-black steps by huge margins (the laser dims ~3.5x on real content per reviewer measurements) and actually **raise** the 255 patch, because the gamma compensation lifts highlights while the laser dims. One reviewer measured exactly that on pre-release firmware 1.2.36 — DBLE pushed dynamic contrast past **80,000:1** at a comparable iris setting.

The feature worked before our units shipped. On V1.2.54, on my unit: nothing moves. Factory reset already done. No change.

## It's not just me — and it's not everyone

- Backers in the **US, Spain, Italy, and France** reporting the identical dead toggle on V1.2.54
- Multiple reports that the **Black Level Tuning slider produces identical output at min and max**
- At least one backer with a **confirmed working unit** — so this is a firmware or batch split, not a universal defect
- And the spicy one: XGIMI support told an EU backer his unit

> "could be a beta unit"

...which is quite a sentence to say to a paying customer, and if early Kickstarter units actually shipped with beta provisioning, that deserves an official statement.

## Where this stands

Support ticket filed with serial number, full methodology, and repro steps. The Kickstarter thread is collecting data points. To be fair to XGIMI: when the community flagged the anti-RBE issue, they shipped a fix via OTA fast. They can move when the data is clean. So let's hand them clean data.

## If you own a TNM, this takes two minutes

  1. **Firmware version** (Settings → About)
  2. **Source + region** (Kickstarter or retail, US/EU/UK/other)
  3. **The test:** f/2.0, laser 10, dynamic iris off, letterboxed dark scene *playing* — do the black bars visibly deepen when you toggle DBLE?
  4. **If broken:** does the Black Level Tuning slider do anything at min vs. max?

For the record: this projector is otherwise the best thing I've ever pointed at a screen, and the native contrast claims are real. That's exactly why I want the headline dynamic feature we all paid for actually working.

Will update as data comes in and as XGIMI responds.

**TL;DR:** DBLE is measurably dead on some Titan Noir Max units on V1.2.54 — zero laser modulation, zero gamma lift, verified with locked-exposure camera in the max-authority config. Some units work. Drop your firmware + test result below so we can map the split.
