Looks like Chrome 150 will no longer be able to use/install MV2 extensions such as uBO from Chrome Web Store. Sideloading might work for a while longer though.

It might be finally time for Chrome's uBO users to either switch to uBO Lite or to another browser.

Q&A

• What's happening?

  • Chrome/Chromium is removing the powerful "Manifest v2" extension framework that uBO and many other extensions rely on.
  • It's been replaced by a new version that heavily restricted the capabilities of content blockers.
  • There is no way of converting the fully-functioning uBO to this version.
    • As an alternative, a simpler version of this blocker was made. It's called uBlock Origin Lite.

• Does this mean the end of the uBO project as a whole?

  • Of course NOT! Firefox has stated they have no current plans for removing the mv2 framework and uBO will continue to receive the full support on that browser.
    In fact, uBO works best on Firefox, so moving to it should improve your overall uBO experience.

• I don't like Firefox, are all chromium-engine browsers losing uBO?

  • No, so far Brave and Opera stated they plan on keeping Mv2 support for extensions like uBO, for as long as it's gonna be possible.
  • While Edge originally planned to follow Chrome, they haven't updated their removal timeline in years, so it's possible they'll support it for a while longer.

• Should I just stop updating Chrome? Will that let me keep uBO?

  • NO! Definitely not.
    Up-to-date browsers are your strongest security protection on the web. There is no point in keeping uBO while leaving known holes in your browser open to attacks.

• I'm not able to change browsers because my device is managed by my school/company (or I simply don't want to change browsers). What can I do?

  • Unfortunately, you'll have to say farewell to the full uBO project (or similar extensions). Your only choice will be installing the less powerful mv3 iteration of your favorite content blocker, e.g. uBOL (uBlock Origin Lite), which should still be enough for most users.

TL;DR - officially uBO supported browsers

• Continued support:
  • Firefox - uBO is most powerful in it. It will continue to work.
  • Brave - extension policy enabled by default. It will let you install uBO (+ a couple other extensions) through a special setting.
  • Opera - plans to let you keep uBO.
• Full removal:
  • Chrome - majority of users lost access already, some workarounds made it possible to postpone removal till August 2025, then till May 2026 (Chrome 149), but starting Chrome 150 (June 2026), these methods will no longer work for their extension store.
    • Sideloading might work for a while longer, but likely not too long.
• Still unspecified:
  • Edge - removal timeline unspecified.

About the Firefox version:
In the last few months Mozilla has had some worrisome delays with reviewing extensions. The last uBO version that got accepted was beta 0, released on March 13 and accepted quickly on March 15. Next beta (1) was released on March 14 and... we're still waiting for a review. It's been 8 weeks. There are 6 unreviewed dev versions (including a release candidate) in the queue. It's possible that each new submission knocks uBO further down the queue AMO had likely set up.
Based on that theory, uBO 1.71 was not submitted to AMO yet. It hasn't been properly tested due to these delays and we'll likely be forced to wait until prior dev releases clear the queue first.

Please do not ask when the FF version will be released. It's out of our hands.

• Do NOT use links from the release page's "Assets" section - these are not signed.
• Use your add-on store or links in release description on the GitHub releases page when they are available.
  • Firefox will have a (signed) direct install link. Other browsers will link to their uBO extension store pages.
• In some cases, installation may be blocked until browser restart. This is protection against accidental mid-session reloads, Issue #717.

When will my browser update uBO?:

• Firefox

  • Firefox Add-ons (AMO) - Submission pending.
  • uBO is a recommended extension on AMO, and as such it must undergo a formal code review each time a new version is published.

• Chrome/Chromium

  • Chrome Web Store (CWS) - Available since 12 May, 2026.
  • Auto update will occur in stages - to spot and react on possible bugs.

• Edge

  • Edge Add-ons - Available since 11 May, 2026.
  • Warning: importing profile from Chrome may cause issues - you may need to reinstall uBO on Edge to fix this. You can transfer settings by saving them to file in uBO Dashboard -> bottom of the Settings tab.

• Opera

  • Opera add-ons - Review pending.
  • Usually, it's submitted a week after bug-free version is published in AMO.

• Brave

  • Brave now Self-Hosts uBO. It installs via a special setting and updates automatically or when prompted via the Extensions' Developer mode.
  • If you installed it via CWS, it's best to make a backup and install the self-hosted version instead.

As a side note, the subreddit has reached 150K members on Apr 9, 2026 and 151K on May 2.

While reddit is bent on removing those stats everywhere in favor of weekly activity, the member count still hasn't been removed internally for moderators. That said, before we reach the next major milestone of 200K, it might be gone too. This is likely our last member growth announcement.
