Extended SMART test progress stuck at 20% on new 28TB Seagate IronWolf Pro drives

Subject: Extended SMART test progress stuck at 20% on new 28TB Seagate IronWolf Pro drives

Post:

Hi everyone,

I recently added two brand new 28TB Seagate IronWolf Pro drives (ST28000NT000) to my system and started an extended SMART self-test on both.

The tests have been running for about 24–25 hours now, but the Unraid WebGUI still shows the progress at 20% (and smartctl -c reports 80% of test remaining). The recommended polling time from the firmware is ~2439 minutes (~40.5 hours).

Both drives behave identically and the SMART attributes look clean so far (0 pending sectors, 0 reallocated sectors, 0 uncorrectable errors, power-on hours: ~25h).

Is it normal for these large Seagate drives to stay at "80% remaining" for this long due to non-linear firmware reporting, or could the test be hanging? Should I just let them continue running?

Thanks in advance for your help!

GA1700 vs. LGA1851 for Unraid

I am planning a 24/7 Unraid home server with a strict focus on achieving the lowest possible idle power consumption. I initially looked at high-end boards like the ASUS ROG Maximus Z890 Hero or Strix Z890-F, but quickly realized their massive VRMs and extra controllers cause them to idle at a power-hungry 50–60W.

I am now torn: Should I stick to the proven LGA1700 platform (e.g., a B760 board with an Intel Core i3-12100 or i5-13500) to easily achieve a highly efficient 15–20W idle setup with Intel QuickSync? Or is there a way to configure a newer LGA1851/B860 Core Ultra system to idle just as efficiently through BIOS tuning (C-states/ASPM)? I'd love to hear from anyone who has successfully measured and optimized the idle power draw of these newer platforms under Unraid!

Evaluating Noctua Cooling Options for SFF Build in Derpcool 160 – NH-D15 Single vs DL-12 Dual

Hello

Building an SFF PC with an Intel 250k plus in a Derpcool 160 case and I’m unsure which cooler setup makes more sense: Noctua NH-D15 with only one fan or the smaller Noctua DL-12 with two fans. Main priority is best cooling performance with lowest noise in a tight case. Any real-world experience which one performs better and stays quieter under load?
