I've read the Dark Elf and Icewind Dale trilogies for the first time now and I absolutely loved Drizzt UNTIL this thing that happens, please help me get through my disapointment :(
Firstly, please PLEASE avoid spoilers as I really wanna continue reading the series!
So the source of my disappointment is when Drizzt kisses Cattie-Brie while she was unconscious in the plane of Tarterus.
Listen, I am a 30 yo woman and I know that back in the 90s such things was "okay". I get it. It was supposed be the first time we get to see Drizzt's romantic feelings for Cattie-Brie or maybe the first time he himself noticed it about him. But damn was it wrong. He's righteous, he's humble, good hearted, everything I admire in a person...I'm so disappointed because it feels so out of character for Drizzt.
Also, maybe I'll be alone in it here but, isn't it strange that Drizzt, an elf who has lived for so long has fallen for a girl he has met only a few years ago as a child? The reading led me to believe he saw her as a little sister. Wulfgar's and Cattie's romantic feelings for each other, in the other hand, were clearly written all along.
But anyway, putting my nitpicking aside, even if he did start seeing her as a grown woman (which she absolutely is), I don't think he would let himself cross the obvious romantic relationship between her and Wulfgar that has already been established. Okay, so he kissed her on accident, that's true. But until the end of the book he doesn't address what he did, not even to himself, alone. He's always been able to sort his feelings out but he didn't this time, which is weird, almost letting me think he does not care or doesn't think he did anything wrong. He doesn't feel guilty or ashamed. Why? Is it because the author was too "rushed" to finish the book? Does this have any sort of continuation on the next books?
Another point that got me disappointed was that Drizzt and Alustriel from Silverymoon did not romance each other. It was a perfect setting for it to happen. Both had the same honorable sense of justice, good intentions, both were amazing characters and powerful as well. I don't get it. It would have been awesome.
I WANT to continue liking Drizzt and the series. I WANT to be convinced. Maybe I'm being too strict on my own sense of honor and the series is just not for me.
