Bashkortostan (Bashkiria) is a republic of Russia between the Volga river and the Ural Mountains in Eastern Europe.
It is the seventh-most populous federal subject in Russia and the most populous republic. Its capital and largest city is Ufa.
After Kazan fell to Ivan the Terrible in 1554–1555, representatives of Bashkir tribes approached the Tsar with a request to voluntarily join Muscovy.

Astrakhan's southern border is the Caspian Sea, eastern is Kazakhstan. The Volga River, the longest river in Europe and one of the symbols of Russia, flows through the region.
The Arkhangelsk Oblast is the largest region in European Russia and the largest province in Europe. Formally, it includes the Nenets Autonomous Okrug (not shown on the map), an independent region of the Russian Federation.
The region's total area is comparable to that of France, Spain, and Madagascar.
Most of the region's territory is located in the Far North: the Franz Josef Land and Novaya Zemlya archipelagos, the Nenets Okrug, and the White Sea islands.
