MSc Cyber Security / CS: UofB vs. UofG? (Looking at stats + grading systems)
Hey everyone,
I’m holding MSc Cyber Security offers from both Birmingham and Glasgow. My goal is to secure a Distinction and pivot into Red Teaming/Bug Bounties. Looking at the data, it is heavily giving Birmingham.
Here’s why on paper:
CS Rankings: UofB is 6th in the UK for Computer Science, while Glasgow is 16th.
Global Reputation: UofB is #68 globally vs. UofG at #80. UofB also clears on Employer Reputation (80.9 vs 70.6).
Grading System: I need that Distinction. UofG’s 22-point scale looks terrifyingly rigid—zero exam board discretion, and a fraction of a decimal point drops you. UofB’s percentage mean and Borderline Algorithm look way more forgiving.
Syllabus: UofB has massive 20-credit practical blocks covering malware replication and memory exploitation, which is perfect for offensive security.
UofB looks like the stronger brand and a much safer bet for protecting my GPA.
For anyone in the School of Computer Science or doing an MSc here—how is the actual course rigor? Is the grading system as supportive as the official rules imply
