What’s happening around Malibu on the weekends?

I attended a local open mic and was suprised to see more women than I normally see and they were super chill on stage. Granted, not very funny or even super engaging… but they way they were casually just saying whatever came to mind (maybe to see what works) and I thought it was pretty cool. I’ve recently changed my own process to take advantage of open mics to try out material, where previously I prepped for them like actual shows... so I appreciated seeing that.

I recently went from a memorized script to just working of a set list to get more relaxed… went back to memorized somewhat unintentionally and whew it wasn’t great, so I have to get back in that groove...

Also started to organize my writing more, slightly updating my approach:

- Ideas: anything that could be a joke, goes into this doc

- Test jokes: from the idea list, once it’s been tweaked, rewritten, and seems to be an actual joke that may work, it goes into this list. This list feeds open mics. I used to get pretty amped for open mics like it was a show… but now I’m just going to test out jokes. If they work, they go into the joke database.

- joke database: tested, workable & searchable jokes that can be mixed together for actual shows.

Did my first open mic at a real comedy club. It was fun just to get on stage at my favorite comedy club, but I was surprised how different it was from a regular open mic. the pace was faster, sets shorter, crowd… much more diverse. The room was one of the biggest I’ve been in and it was surprisingly dark up there, I could barely see the audience. My set wasn’t great - had fun and learned some valuable lessons to apply next week.

Wow I’m surprised by the response! Maybe stupid isn’t an act, because he or his manager should have known better. He was already over exposed with a movie and game show… this was a match to gasoline.
