July 3rd Fishing

Sequoia National Park. I started hiking around 730am and was hitting the water by 8am. Caught about 15-18 fish though i only got pics of 9 fish. All brook trout plus one rainbow. Everything is caught on a size 14 FUTSU kebari. I did spend soms time with dry flies but couldn't get anything on hook. This is the best looking fish of the day. Happy holiday everyone!

Fly Size

Anyone care to share their opinion with kebari sizes? I've only been using Tenkara rod for 2 outings and caught all my fish using a size 14 FUTSU kebari, though I've had plenty of action on my surface flies i have yet to hook anything up.

I'm going to buy more wet flies, likely kebari style. I'm unsure if I should stick with size 14, or if size 12 (even 10) is too big for sierra nevada creeks and rivers. What about tungsten heads for kebari? I'm likely to place an order from dragontail tenkara later today.

Fishing the Sierra Tomorrow - Cant Decide on Location

I'm in Visalia and new to Tenkara. Id like to run up to the Marble Fork of the Kaweah or Big Creek behind China Peak tomorrow morning and fish from about 830-11am. Thoughts?

Opinion on Foaming Soap Quality/Effectiveness?

46M here. Not privy to the B&B products, but I found myself down to my last bottle of Terracotta Canyon foaming soap. They had just opened a new store along my afternoon walks so I thought I'd pop in for some sale-priced replacements, but was told this scent is discontinued. Anyhow, since nothing else really touched on my senses, I started to debate if its even worth continuing to purchase this brand. The Dial brand foaming soap refills are $6/50oz and smell fine to me. In addition, they also kill 99% of germs where no such claims are made by B&B. I'm still debating on buying a few for the guest bathrooms, but at the end of the day, is this stuff even doing a good job of washing our hands, or just drying them out? Does anyone have suggestions for soaps that smell similar to Terracotta Canyon? Or scents that aren't entirely femenine?

First day with a tenkara rod. First day at this river. Bit of a learning curve as I bird-nested the line twice. But I got some bites and eventually got a 7" fish to admire then set free. Mizuchi rod with a FUTSU kebari attached to a floating beetle. Cheers!

Recommendations/Experience on the Tule River(s)?

I'm looking to make a quick trip this friday morning (8-11am) for some tenkara action. I'm curious if anyone has experience on the Tule river systems east of Porterville, specifically upper and lower Coffee camps and the Wishon/Doyle trail areas. I'm working with fixed tenkara length and i'd prefer to fish from the banks or wade into safe depths of water. I'm aware they differ in elevation. My biggest question is whats the better conditions and how busy will it get come 10am? Any other suggestions, I'd prefer to be within 1.5 hours of Visalia CA.

Weighting Down Nymphs

I purchased some non-beadhead pheasant tail nymphs. I'm heading up to the Tule River on friday morning and want to be prepared to sink my flies a bit more if needed. Should I just opt for standard dull colored split-shot or should I make an effort for something brass or tungsten? I'd think flashy is better but IDK? Bonus points if you can tell me what I can source locally or on amazon in a timely manner. I live in Visalia CA

First Time Casting Feedback

Greetings. This past weekend I got out on the shoreline just to work on my knots and see what casting and fly tracking would be like. I'd like to be somewhat prepared for the river next week. I had a terrible time seeing the fly when in the shade, but sun was much easier. My casting range was 10-15ft using a mizuchi rod and about 10ft level line and 4ft of tippet. However, when the wind picked up I had little to no control over my casting. I know the wind can work through the sierra where I'll do most of my fishing. Is it worth experimenting with a shooting line? Ive read a few people use this product. Thoughts?

Tomato Help

Anyone wanna take a stab at whats going on at the top of this plant? Watering or nutrient? Its only occurring on 1/3 plants in the raised bed. The variety is sweet 100 cherry tomatoes. I amended the soil with mostly plant tone, jobes tomato fertilizer, and worm castings. Please advise?

Almost Ready to Fish

Thanks everyone for your helpful advise. I'm almost ready to venture out later this month and give Tenkara a try. I have a Mizuchi rod with level line and 5x tippet. I've been given some wet flies (#14 FUTSU Kebari and #12 Pheasant Tail Nymphs without bead heads). I purchased #14 EHC, Purple Parachute, and Foam Beetles). This weekend i'm going to work on casting accuracy in my backyard.

My last question - what is the simplest dry dropper rig that wont complicate my casting efforts and minimizes tangles? Should I just leave an extended tag from the dry fly? I do own tippet rings that that provides an easier path....

My Collection

Just thought id share, since not everyone appreciates it. Been a few years since I did any head hunting. Quite frankly I dont want anymore axes cause I dont know where to put them. But ive got a fair collection. Plenty of plumb victory in there. Im not sure i have a favorite I could probably point towards a top 5.

I'm back with more indecisiveness. I have not been tenkara or fly fishing before. I purchased a Mizuchi rod and I fish the western slopes of the sierra nevada. I think i'm ready to purchase flies but still unsure what to pull the trigger on and what sizes. Do you folks catch more fish with dry or wet flies? And quite frankly, whats the more satisfying casting experience with?

  • Elk Hair Caddis
  • Parachute Adams
  • Prince Nymphs
  • Wolly Buggers
  • Roam Ants

Do I want these in size 12, 14, or 16? My experience is the fish are 6-12in where I usually venture to. If I make my way to the Kern River i'll expect larger fish there. Do i need bead heads for the wet flies? Anything i'm leaving off this list? These are the most affordable i've seen on the internet, but would appreciate a good assortment back for under $30 to expose myself to more shapes and sizes.

Is it any good? I'd likely traverse to in with a camelback so I have fresh water and flexibility and my poles. But wondering if this would be worth the small investment for accessing flies and whatnot. I dislike my vest. Nirvana Simple Chest Pack
