So I'm confused. I just found out that Higurashi is just part of a larger series. Of video games? ...or something? Could someone please explain and also tell me how much content there is?

I've only seen the remake anime to be clear.

So the first five were good and I enjoyed them, then the last two I watched had horribly sad endings. Then I realized that the last two were the only ones without any supernatural elements whatsoever. So now I'm wondering if that's like a thing in anime movies or just a coincidence? Because I really hate sad endings. And I'd rather avoid them altogether.
