Tattoo havers, what are your experience?

Im looking to get the Doll/Maria as my first tattoo, but wasn't sure what artist would match their vibe. Found one that *looks* like a fit, but I was curious what other fans looked for when picking an artist? What are some things you'd want to prioritize in regards to what the artist can do, or questions you would ask?

(Sorry if this isn't allowed)

When does "referencing" become "copying"?

Made this sketch while working today. Heavily based on this ref I found on Pinterest. It was simple enough to base mine off the ref image in my head rather than constantly looking at it.

When does something like this no longer become "a reference" and become "mine"? Im not really privy to art etiquette but it would feel wrong to post it as something *I* drew. Does this make sense?

Billy Eyelash

Brother I have spent HOURS trying to measure out the features. While they're fine on paper (heh), this chick is NOT Billie 😭 what am I missing?

Im convinced its the eyes that aren't clicking. I added detail on one to see if its just because im working with the lines only, but even with shade and details it ain't it.

Went from Billie to Bethany istg

Worked on this last night, and while im overall pretty satisfied, and while I dont think they look *bad*, I cant help but notice the eyes dont quite fit the ref. The more I look however, I cant seem to figure out why?

I was mainly practicing using some form and gestures, and while this is probably too advanced of a pose for my level, I was pretty happy. The mask in particular turned out pretty well. Decided to practice some shading as well (since spidey makes it kinda easy to see), but idk it looks a Lil wonky.

I know i should practice more on balls and whatnot, I was curious what I should work towards in the future.

Tried to actually practice shading for once. Was definitely a learning experience 😅

I wonder if I have an issue with recognizing values, because something feels SUPER dark, and then when I compare it to a different value it looks nearly identical, and im not sure why. I almost wonder if my pencil in this book just doesn't give me as much contrast. Sometimes the pages refuse to take the graphite, and will give me little "specks" of negative space. (Does that make sense?

Anyways, tips are appreciated!🫶🏻

This was just supposed to be some eye practice (which felt a lot better than they used to be!), but turned into a full sketch. Haven't done realism in months, but this was fun. Still confused where my mistakes are coming up though. Are proportions just slightly off or are there other points?

(Also how tf do you shade hair in any believable sense?)
