What do you all think of Drakengard 1 story wise ?

Just finished Drakengard 1, and after having been through that last grinding stretch to get all weapons plus beating the last boss (fuck that guy btw), I was left pretty divided if I actually liked the game as a whole.

Gameplay did not shock me that much, I knew what I was going in for, and I was even kinda surprised as I slowly got my grisp and became able to control all that jank, which definitely made playing all the more enjoyable.

Story though...
I understand what it was trying to do, and conceptually it's really interesting, don't get me wrong. The subversion of the classical "fantasy jrpg" with a bunch of depressed psychopath for the main cast, the somber nihilistic tone of the visual. Every character is pathetic in its own way, with Angelus constantly reminding us of the horror of humanity.

But, it was kinda bad ? I feel the dub might be partly to blame here, some characters being really funny because of this, despite how sad and twisted they sounded. Another factor for me is the way the narration is done. You got the cutscenes, which were pretty cool. You got the events which are alright too. But the dialogues in-mission felt a bit weird. They're not really conversation and most of the time they don't bring anything of great value beside Angelus shit talking you or humanity. Then sometime they drop crazy infos like "Ahah Caim you want to bang your sister". Like wtf !? It was never brought up before in the game, never shown, and beside that one line and Furiae suicide scene where it's hinted at, it never is relevant ? it seem like an important character element, one that is apparently at the core of Caim and what make him twisted, yet it's brushed off like that. If not for that one line, it would be impossible to know it.

I might have digressed for a bit because that specific thing nagged at me the moment I realized it when replaying the story to gather all weapons, but basically, in-mission dialogue felt disconnected one another, nonsensical and pretty repetitive without truly ever delving into the character or story.

Yet, I ever only saw praise of Drakengard story and how novel it was. So, what do yall think of it? Maybe you disagree and I didn't understood the story or overlooked some elements? Or my feelings are similar to yours ?
