Lammas is known as a Greater Sabbat, which means that the date of Lammas Eve on July 31st is observed in addition to the dates of Lammas from August 1st to August 2nd. The word Lammas comes from the Old English word hlāfmæsse, meaning "loaf mass," a Christian harvest festival where the first loaf of bread from the grain harvest is blessed. Lammas is also known as Lughnasadh, as the Celtic God Lugh of light and fire is traditionally worshiped by Ancient Celtics on this day. Although Lammas and Lughnasadh have different historical origins, they are commonly observed together today as a celebration of the first harvest. The first harvest traditionally honors grains such as wheat, barley, oats, rye, and corn, recognizing the abundance that sustains our communities. Lammas is a wonderful time for making gratitude lists, baking homemade breads, picking berries or seasonal flowers, crafting poppets or corn dollies, volunteering in nature, taking a walk through a field of sunflowers, or playing competitive sports under the light of the Sun. Below is a Harvest Basket Spell with journaling prompts that you can use as a way to connect with the magick of Lammas.

🌟 Spell

1. Begin crafting your spell by washing your hands with solar charged water. Solar charged water is when you leave water out to charge in the sunlight on a bright and clear day. You may also want to set your altar with a scent like floral incense, play relaxing summer music, and clean your environment.
2. Prepare a meal to eat after your nature walk. You can make something like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich with jam and any nut or seed butter. You can also plan to eat fresh berries, seeds, and corn chips. These ingredients – bread, berries, corn, seeds, and nuts are all ingredients symbolic of Lammas. Place the items for your meal on a plate on your altar. Underneath the plate, write your intentions for this spell on a piece of paper. Make sure your intention is written in the present tense, uses positive language, sounds achievable, and is progress oriented. It should reflect your desires and be phrased in a way that feels empowering and true. Allow your meal to charge on your altar while you go on your nature walk.
3. Go on a nature walk to find one of each of the following items to put in your harvest basket. Be sure to gather all your items responsibly. Only collect naturally fallen items or gather items with permission while respecting local wildlife and sanctuaries.

4. To charge your harvest basket, sit at your altar with all your found items in your basket. Raise each item you found above your head and take a deep breath to connect with its energy. Think about something you heard, smelled, tasted, felt, and saw during your nature walk. As you get present, visualize absorbing all the positive energy created in this spell.

5. Now cleanse your hands by washing them with solar charged water before eating your meal. With each bite you are nourishing your body with your intentions. Give thanks for the harvests present in your life and the seeds that are growing underneath it all.

The July Full Moon is often called the Buck Moon because it is the time of year when male deer begin growing new antlers. The Buck Moon is all about directing change to prepare for the future, while also adapting to the energetic cycles and shifts within nature. The July Full Moon can also be called the Full Moon in Aquarius. The Full Moon in Aquarius is a time to recognize the spirit of individuality, generosity, and invention within each of us. 🌕♒🏺

The Full Moon in Aquarius reminds us that everyone has different strengths, talents, and ways of thinking. We can honor our own ideas and perspectives while also being a part to something larger than ourselves. Our originality makes us stand out while our commonality brings us together. We learn to accept, enjoy, and work through our strangeness and weirdness as we see ourselves reflected in like minded people. Spirit Guide: Ala of the Igbo, Nigerian people

Ala’s name means earth, the realm we live in. She is the ancient mother, the foremost deity of the Igbo people. She symbolizes justice, death, mortality, and grief. She represents the cycles of life and the afterlife. Our deceased ancestors find comfort in her womb, the soil of the earth. Umbilical cords are buried in the earth to anchor our connection to Ala. Reincarnation is within the domain of Ala. When we pass away we are replanted into the earth as seeds. Ala typically reincarnates us in our same family groups with different roles. If you feel called to heal generational patterns, this Strawberry Moon may be a meaningful time to begin that work. 

Surrender your grief to the earth. There are many different types of grief from the loss of relationships, opportunities, and lives. If you are overwhelmed by grief, trauma, or betrayal, take all the time you need to move through your emotions. It is healthy to grieve. When I think of the Strawberry Moon, I think of leaving out a bowl of strawberries on my altar to pray for love, belonging, and healthier connections in my life.

I hope that this Strawberry Moon blesses you with harmony, balance, and humility in your communities.

According to one Indigenous creation myth, long ago when humanity had just begun to populate the earth, we found fault in our diversity, criticizing each other, and feeling entitled over each other. We didn’t want to work together because we all wanted to fight to be the best even though it caused so much heartbreak. So the Creator decided to invent the strawberry.

The strawberry is known as the “Heart Berry” because it is shaped like a heart, holds medicine that supports heart health, and it has its seeds on the outside as if it is wearing its heart on its sleeve.

The Creator placed strawberry bushes at the base of trees and asked birds to carry them all around the world so that everyone could experience the heart healing properties of strawberries. When people began to taste this sweet fruit they were able to find love, acceptance, and understanding in each other. They were able to learn how to see each other at a heart, soul level.

This story encourages us to never leave behind those who are weak or sick, but to instead stand beside them, lean on them when in need, and to share leadership roles. We can go so much farther together, through teamwork, community, and appreciating our differences. Through the Strawberry Moon we can mend our differences and open our hearts to each other.
