This might be a stupid question, but how are spec scripts supposed to work?

I prefer writing in prose but I have always wanted to break into TV or theatre writing. I’ve attempted a few short playscripts since those always seem to be looser in format than TV and film scripts, it’s also harder to know where to start. With books you can at least contact agents but most explicitly don’t accept scripts.

I keep hearing about spec scripts but I’m never quite sure what they’re for. I try and read about them but it never seems to click for me. Are people really going to want a script of a show you’re not even part of? Isn’t it fanfiction? No disrespect to fanfics but I wouldn’t put one on my portfolio. And where are you meant to send them when pretty much every script submission I see is for originals.

I guess my general questions are: Is it worth having one? How are you supposed to write a spec script? What shows are the best to do one for? And when exactly are you supposed to use them?

Do you prefer the Milestone universe as its own thing or part of DC?

Do you think the Milestone roster would work better as its own thing like the new Milestone run or does it work best with the wider mythos and reach that comes with being part of DC?

[Loved Trope] The Non-Prodigy

In many stories you get characters who are extraordinary, who excel, who are geniuses. Prodigies. These are the ones who are defined by NOT being those characters.

-Prince Zuko (Avatar: The Last Airbender): The Prince of the Fire Nation, an oppressive might makes right empire. Despite being royalty, Zuko lacks talent with fire bending to the point where they thought he might not even be capable of bending when he was younger. Even though he was, he lacked the natural talent that his little sister had. He was always a disappointment and constantly compared to her. When he was scarred and banished it’s all but confirmed Ozai was just waiting for an excuse to do so. He’s belittled and scorned as a pariah by his father, sister, general and everyone but his own crew and uncle. He does have some skill with swords but anything that isn’t firebending is not valued.

-Zanka Nijiku (Gachiakuta): Unlike Zuko, Zanka did display some natural talent. He was far above his peers and the top of his class and he had always been proud of himself. Then Hyo showed up and he learned just what a genius truly was. It broke him realising what a small pond he was in. Unlike Zuko’s relationship with Azula, Hyo doesn’t seem to hold any strong opinions of him and the mental spiral Zanka had was entirely in his own head. He now has a desire to prove himself against anyone who he sees as a genius while proclaiming himself an average joe.

-Magna Swing (Black Clover): The Black Bulls is a magic knight squad full of misfits. People whose talents are often overlooked for one reason or another. Magna however, isn’t. He’s not a disgraced noble, doesn’t have anti-magic or any hidden powers or huge magic reserves like the others. He just has fire magic which as far as magic goes is common. All he has going for him are his guts. He’s often overshadowed by his best friend/ rival Luck. But even without those things he manages to develop tactics that allow him to fight people far above his weight class.

-Charles Boyle (Brooklyn 99): An example from a more comedic show. Pretty much all the main characters in the 99th precinct are prodigies in some way. Despite their personalities quirks they’re still tough, smart and the like. Then you have Boyle. Like the others he’s kind of a goofball but isn’t a natural prodigy physically or mentally, so often has to work harder than the rest. They all see each other as family but the others don’t always take Charles seriously.
