Looking for adventure/mystery/horror/historical Chinese shows or movies — tired of romance dramas
Hey everyone,
When I was learning English as a kid, I feel like I barely had to "study" — I was just constantly surrounded by the language through cartoons, movies, and shows I actually liked. I'm trying to recreate that same immersion with Chinese, but I'm struggling to find content that fits what I'm into.
Every recommendation list I find is full of romance dramas or Disney-princess-style stuff, which just isn't my thing. I'm looking for:
- Adventure
- Investigation / detective stories
- Mystery
- Horror
- Historical dramas (not necessarily romance-focused)
Doesn't matter if it's live-action, animated, a cartoon, or an anime-style show — as long as it's in Mandarin (or has a solid Mandarin dub) and isn't centered on romance.
Bonus points if it has good subtitles (Chinese + English, or Chinese only if the vocab is manageable for intermediate learners).
