I have this big beautiful string of hearts. I took it out of the cache pot to water it today and discovered what looks like mold growing out of the drainage holes. I live in zone 9b-10a (southern California), it’s in a bedroom and sits in front of a south window that has plantation shutters so lots of filtered light, and the ceiling fan is on 24/7, I do not have a humidifier in the room but it sits in a cluster of plants on the shelf. The nursery pot does not sit directly on the bottom of the cache pot, the rim of the nursery pot sits on the rim of the cache pot so it suspends it and there’s about an inch or more of space between the bottom of the nursery pot and the bottom of the cache pot. There’s also a hole in the bottom of the cache pot. I thought there was plenty of air circulation for it, so I’m not sure why there would be mold growing out of the bottom of the pot. The plant seems to be very healthy and is growing beautifully.

Has anyone had this problem before? Any ideas on why it would be growing mold? What should I do now? The options I’ve come up with are :

1. Leave it alone
2. Repot it
3. Use my soldering iron to make holes in the sides of the nursery pot for more airflow for the roots

Any other suggestions?

I purchased this string of hearts with 3 seed pods already growing. I put the mesh bag around the pods so I wouldn’t lose the seeds when the pods split open. It worked really well. It’s been a fun learning experience. I’m not sure what to do from here so if you need me I’ll be googling what to do with them 😅
