Aggressive Dogs in the West Village, anyone else?

Posting this as a reminder to stay vigilant when walking your dogs. Since getting my dog (cavapoo) we’ve had some bad dog interactions where owners say their dog is nice, the dog almost bites and then they walk away awkwardly with little to no apology.

While rude and annoying, it usually ends up being fine. However, my dog and I just encountered a Black German shepherd mix that almost got me and my dog. I walked deep into the street to avoid an older white man and his large black dog on Morton st. The dog snapped his head around, saw us, and was an inch away from grabbing my dog by the time his owner finally gripped their leash. When a dog reacts like this, I highly doubt it’s the first time (not the dog’s fault, more the owner needs to be more vigilant during the walk if they know their dog is reactive.) Has this happened to anyone else in this area?

I’ve met some other dog owners in this neighborhood that have expressed similar concern on the way a lot of these aggressive dogs are being walked—loose leash, no apology when almost attacking, and some even being attacked. Not sure there’s much to do about it other than to post this as a reminder to be mindful around other dogs. It’s so hard to avoid other dogs on these sidewalks, if anyone has tips please let me know.
