How did you guys actually progress into harder grades? Looking for specific advice
I’m currently climbing around V5–V6 and have sent several V6s, but I’m trying to figure out how to keep progressing toward V7 and beyond. I can connect moves on harder problems but rarely ever send a 7 or harder.
I don’t currently follow a structured training plan. I mostly just climb, lightly fingerboard as part of my warmup, and occasionally do some pull-ups after climbing. I’ve watched quite a few YouTube videos on improving technique, but most of the advice is pretty general stuff like “use your feet better,” “learn heel/toe hooks,” “keep your hips close,” etc.
I’m wondering what specific things actually made a noticeable difference for you when you were around V5–V6 and trying to break into V7+.
For example:
- Were there specific technique drills that helped you?
- Did you start structured finger/strength training?
- Did you change how you approached projecting?
- Did you deliberately climb weaknesses instead of just climbing what you’re good at?
- Did you start doing things like limit bouldering, board climbing, or movement drills?
- What’s something you wish you had started doing earlier?
- I’m not necessarily looking for a full training program. I’m more interested in the less obvious things that helped you improve as a climber once you got past the beginner/intermediate stage.
