I wrote my first fan-fic. It's a short story (2,500 words), and I'm having someone outside the fandom look over it, mostly for clarity and grammar.

I haven't gotten her feedback yet, but I'm kind of nervous about walking the line between inserting too much information and too little. I want to orientate the reader and give my own takes on the characters. Plus, I have theories, but I don't want long chunky paragraphs. I also don't want to throw off the pacing.

How do you guys balance giving too much infomation or too little? Is it just trial and error and reader feedback or do you have loose rules you follow?
