Help on the little ground wire in the distributor

Question for you Bug head, there is a little wire on the left going from the small square nut and, from what I understood, supposed to be welded on the plate.

I have found that wire end lose when I control the points' gap. I read that if not connected l, the car won't start. Honestly the car runs fantastic when the wire was already loose (I guess) but i decided to snug it in the small spring for now, so at least it does ground.

My question, since I cannot weld, can I make a little wire with flat "O" connectors and connect one end between the distributor case and the nut, and the other end below the screw that holds the points plate down ?

Or can I leave it as is ? The car runs very good for info.

Thanks for your help !

Short escapade next to Kuala Lumpur

Took grandma for an hour drive outside Kuala Lumpur, first time trying to push her a bit and she gets to 100Km/h on flat without issue, could probably push 10km/h more but I'm still in the learning curve with her ^^

Definitely nicer in cooler temp, as it's like an oven these days and as soon as traffic hits, I'm always thinking she's gonna break.

Anyhow have a good Sunday folks, drive safe !

Absolute virus

Even when I'm on this team, I wish he wasn't in the game. And don't tell me he's just skilled, even against good Clans, he always scores double what the best guy in either team do.

That guy is like herpes, even when not there, you know it's coming back..

Came for an engine oil change ^-^

Turns out the oil leaks I thought to be one axle gasket, it was the transmission one. So engine out, I'm also having the oil filter gaskets changed, alternator belt and distributor point. I wrote in a precious post about a hot coil, culprit was damaged points little wire inside the distributor.

Also found out the alternator pulley has a lot of slack so getting good second hand one.

As I am new in the beetle world, it's good to see this, starting fresh.

By the way this is in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, at a classic Beetle specialist garage.

Hot coil issue

Hi guys, just went for a quick drive around the block, car ran well. Once I parked and shut off the engine, I checked the coil and it's pretty hot, like you can't touch it for more than a sec.

For context, I'm in Kuala Lumpur, it's now 30°C (feels like 35), it's night time so had the lights on and was mostly traffic jam drive, barely shift the third gear. So engine was probably running on the hot side but didn't stall or acted suspicious at anytime.

Is there an wiring issue you can see from the picture ? I do not know how old is the coil, but judging by how it looks, it's not that young. Should I just change it for a new blue BOSH anyway, is it normal that is gets hot under these circumstances ?

Any advices are welcome, I'm at the very beginning of the learn curve with this car. Thanks !

Steering box leak

Hi guys, the steering box is leaking from below. From top, these two "screws" (?) feel mushy too. I'm wondering if there is anything I should do from here, just the top of the box.

Open it and fill it up with grease maybe so it's not completely dry until I can bring it to a mechanic, is there a seal at the top worth replacing ?

I'm mainly wondering, since I can't take it all apart from the car (working in my builsing parking lot), is it worth it to open it or should I just leave it be.

Thanks !

Different cable size, any risk ?

Hi everyone, I've posted previously regarding my plan to change the old battery cables and you have been super helpful so thanks again !

I've prefer the 4AWG cable (25mm) which was the biggest but now that I compare it with the old battery cable in the car, I'm not so sure anymore...

Was my previous cable oversized or is my new cable wrong ?

I have order the same size for positive and negative (picture are both negative cables)

Thanks in advance for your help !

Hi guys, I checked my battery cables and they look a bit tired to say the least. I checked online and planned to buy the attached pic.

Any precautions I should take to replace them ? I've noticed I don't have the little wire that goes to the regulator, they have repositionned the regulator when restored the car and I haven't tracked it down yet.

Thanks for your help

Need your advice here. I wanted to try my new jack (result: not the best) and decide to quickly inspect the under carriage. I have notice a broken/split piece that half moon shape near the bottom left bolt.

I do not know exactly what it does and wether it has a major role in supporting the rear axle.

Is it something that makes the car undrivable or is it something I should take care of in the future but isn't stopping me for enjoying some weekend rides ?

Thanks for you help guys
