SoFi DD Bonus - beware

TLDR - SoFi refusing to pay direct deposit promo bonus despite having fully met the requirements under SoFi terms and conditions.

FYI beware: SoFi does not honor and will actively dispute paying the direct deposit account bonus if there are any technical issues on their end. I have had numerous chat sessions and extended phone call with SoFi and they still refuse to pay out.

Specifically, my SoFi checking has fully and timely met all required terms and conditions for the $400 direct deposit account bonus. I had a chat session with a SoFi rep on August 5 in which the rep confirmed that is the case and submitted a support ticket to have this corrected. I have and noted to SoFi screenshots of these chat transcripts, which SoFi claims they cannot access (despite my being able to). Per this Aug 5 chat, the rep confirmed in writing that my SoFi checking account has met the requirements for the $400 bonus” by stating in response “absolutely correct!”

Subsequently, despite this chat and after the rep issued the support ticket for further review, I received an email further stating that the bonus information provided did not meet the eligibility criteria required to qualify for the bonus.

The issue is due to the fact that on April 13, 2026, my account received a $3.85 deposit credit from Upside, the cash back redemption app. SoFi had this credit incorrectly categorized as a “direct deposit payer” as it is shown on my end for the transaction on the SoFi app. SoFi is improperly claiming that this credit was an eligible direct deposit under the promo
terms and conditions, despite my repeatedly having explained to them that it is not, as it does not meet the definition of an “eligible direct deposit” under SoFi’s terms. I have never worked for or received any income, or even any further cashback credit into my SoFi account, from Upside. It was a one time cashback credit.

The first true payroll direct deposit/eligible direct deposit, was received into my SoFi account from my employer on 7/14/26. That established the 25 day promotional window to be 7/14/26 - 8/8/26, which window was confirmed in writing to me via chat by a SoFi rep. I receive the same deposit amount on a weekly basis and therefore subsequently received payroll direct deposits from this same employer on 7/21/26, 7/28/26, and 8/4/26, for a total that exceeds the $5k minimum threshold for the $400 bonus, during the period 7/14 - 8/8.

Per SoFi terms and conditions: (https://www.sofi.com/banking/checking-offer/)

Eligible: Recurring ACH deposit of regular income to your SoFi Checking or Savings account, including payroll, pension, or government benefit payments (e.g., Social Security), made by your employer, payroll or benefits provider or government agency ("Eligible Direct Deposit")

Not Eligible: Deposits that are not from an employer, payroll or benefits provider or government agency and deposits that are non-recurring in nature are not eligible. Examples of deposits that are not eligible include check deposits, peer-to-peer transfers (e.g., transfers from Zelle®, PayPal, Venmo, Wise, etc.), merchant transactions (e.g., transactions from PayPal, Stripe, Square, etc.), bank ACH funds transfers, wire transfers from external accounts, and IRS tax refunds. SoFi Bank shall, in its sole discretion, assess your Eligible Direct Deposit activity to determine eligibility and may require additional documentation to complete this verification.

Specifically, the Upside credit meets the definition a “not eligible” deposit, as it was not from an employer, payroll or benefits provider or government agency and was a non-recurring in nature. Because of this, it should not have triggered the 25 promotion window from the time the upside credit was deposited, but that is exactly what SoFi is claiming and why they are refusing the payout the $400 bonus.

I wanted to believe transitioning to SoFi banking would be beneficial, but this repeatedly lack of good faith in honoring their own terms and conditions is concerning.

Has anyone had similar experience and were you successful in having SoFi properly payout the bonus? If so, what did you do? Thanks in advance.
