(UK) Seeking advice on whether to study chemical engineering at Bath University
Hello chemical engineers! Just want to preface this post by saying that I have only just started using Reddit today so I apologise in advance for any mistakes or errors I may have made in posting this or if this is the wrong subreddit to make such a post.
I am currently set to study Msci Chemistry at the University of Bristol in September 2026. I have recently been considering taking a gap year and reapplying to study Chemical Engineering masters with a placement year for experience (Meng) at the University of Bath as this course really excites me and I feel would give me better career prospects and a better salary than perhaps I could achieve through studying purely Chemistry, whilst also being something I am interested in (btw I already know that the chemical engineering degree has little actual Chemistry in it and this is not a concern for me as I am very interested in all sciences and mathematics).
I’ve heard that chemical engineering graduates have strong career prospects in the UK, and I’d like to know how true this is. I’m aiming for a job paying £40K or more fairly soon after graduating, ideally without needing to relocate often. I’m also surprised that Bath doesn’t require an interview or entry exam for chemical engineering. I achieved three A*s in Maths*,* Chemistry, and Biology, plus an A* in the EPQ, so I feel I have a good chance — but I’d like to hear from people who’ve studied the course about what I can do to strengthen my application, as the process seems surprisingly simple.
I’m also curious about what kind of pre‑reading is actually useful for getting a head start in first year. I’ve heard the course is pretty tough, and while I’ve got a solid work ethic — I was regularly doing ten‑hours of effective study days during A levels — I’d really like to know how the workload compares. I’m especially interested in how the content and difficulty differ from A levels and what the jump to first‑year study actually feels like.
Thank you for reading and I look forward to hear from you!
(p.s. sorry for any poor grammar/English)
