Omnipod 5 App in Canada

I know there has been some discussion on this in the past, and folks have said "it's in Health Canada's court". And when I spoke to reps from Omnipod, they didn't put anything in writing, but instead said things like "we're hoping to hear soon".

However, I received a written letter from Health Canada today after inquiring, and they said Health Canada has received no applications for App approval in Canada. The app has been out for years in the states, it's just region locked here.

Has anyone ever seen anything in print from Omnipod/Insulet that they're actively trying to approve the app in Canada? Or do they like that our provincial governments have to pay for the PDM? I imagine there's a pretty big profit margin on those things - it's generously a $50 phone and they charge $650 for it.

Also wondering if there are any petitions to Omnipod to get them to unlock the app. The bluetooth is so weak, and the battery is pretty bad. I'd really rather control from my phone. Might start looping if there's no news.

So long MTL, and thanks for all the fish (resto thoughts)

Just spent a lovely weekend in Montreal with my wife. We've spent a lot of time here over the years - I did my masters here in 2016 - but this was the first time we've been in the summer since 2016.

We stayed in Griffintown because the hotel was pet friendly and we had our dog with us. I used to live in the plateau, and I always felt like I wasn't cool enough. In Griffintown I didn't feel uncool, but I did feel out of shape, and I work out reasonably often. There's a lot of athleisure and people are fit!

Some thoughts on what we ate while in Montreal. I'm T1D and my wife is pescetarian, so we eat pretty light - no Joe Beef for us:

Thursday
Metro: Arrived late, grabbed some groceries and ate at the hotel. It's funny coming from Toronto and seeing how "elbows up" has changed Montreal - not very much. For better or worse, la belle province has been doing economic nationalism for so long that there's always lots of local products, even at the local grocery store. Had some St. Viateur Bagels (our fave) with cretons and Alexis de Portneuf cheese. I've always liked the Meteorite, but my wife doesn't go in for blue cheese that much. Wish the store carried some whelks/bourgot. I never see those in Toronto.

Friday:
September: Cool place to be seen, lots of young people enjoying the nice weather. Had a cold brew and the avocado toast. It was tasty! The toast was cut thick and supported the heft. There was a kind of cilantro sauce, pepitas, and some tajin on the avo. The cilantro sauce made it a bit more elevated than what we might get at home.

Mina Mina: Wife had a matcha latte, which was not overly sweet and had a lovely herbal/grassy flavour if you're into that (she is). Also had a honey/tahini cookie. The iced americano was dialed in really well, had a lovely balance with no milk or sweetening.

Foxy: Excellent cocktails. I had a mescal white negroni and she had a gin and ... amaretto? cocktail. Maybe red vermouth. I think it was called the Bijou. Both spirit forward and not overly sweet while maintaining a nice balance. For food we had:

  • Little Gem: This was the standout, for me. A vegan riff on a caesar salad, tangy, nicely textured.
  • Cavatelli with clams: Nothing to write home about for me, but not poorly done. Butter, white wine, herbs. My wife was really into it, I thought it was lacking some acid or something.
  • Maitake: Fantastic texture, little smokey almost.
  • Halibut: Buttery, perfectly cooked in that french way. I can never cook fish this well - the skin was crispy while the inside melted.
  • Strawberry almond tart: The standout of the meal. Fresh quebec strawberries with a strawberry sorbet on almond crumb. Fresh, sweet and lightly sour.

I'm not sure I'd recommend Foxy to everyone. It was pretty expensive and not out of this world, but for an upper income person who doesn't like unusual flavours (not me), they execute things very well.

Saturday:

Miel et Ble: A good European style coffee, little darker roast than a third wave. Croissant was more bready than flakey, but I don't think that's a knock against it. And there were these puffs, kind of like an unfilled profiterole. I liked them a lot.

Bulla cafe: I think this was the best coffee of the trip, but maybe that's because it was so hot in the sun and the ice was welcome. Like hunger is the best sauce.

Denise: Thank you r/MTLFoodLovers for the recommendation! This was maybe the best meal I've had in Montreal in 13 years of going there? Shout out to Michele, our server, who had great recommendations. Floored this place wasn't more busy. I had the bisou d'abeille, which was a mezcal drink with honey, wife had a martini with a white anchovy. Much more character than the cocktails at Foxy - not necessarily better, but especially the martini would be unheard of in Toronto. We had:

  • Cucumber & Shrimp: So fresh, acidic, great texture with the smashed cucumber.
  • Buffalo chicken bao: I had this whole thing to myself. Loved it. I'm basic, what can I say?
  • Maitake in tandoori: The standout dish of the trip. Charred mushrooms pair perfectly with tandoori. Feel like I haven't encountered this pairing at any Indian restaurants I've been to.
  • Walleye: Cooked in a more rustic style than the halibut at Foxy. Had some texture as a result of what I think was high heat cooking, almost like a swordfish. Not overdone IMO, but if you like a really buttery fish this wasn't it. But man was that skin crispy, and the veg paired really well.
  • Basque Cheesecake with apple and olive oil: Hot damn. Smoooooth. Had it with a Quebec apple vermouth.

All in all, great weekend in my favourite city in the country. Amazing weather, great food, coffee, drinks. Hung out by the Lachine canal at night with our dog. Couldn't ask for more. Can't wait to be back.

Worth grading this vintage?

Never graded before. I know the cost is really high right now, and some of these cards (like the zard) have a fair bit of whitening. Funnily it was the one that never left a top loader. I think I just got it in that condition.

At $100+ CAD per card, wondering if these guys are in gradable condition. Only the magneton seems ultra clean, but I think the centering is a bit off. I know PSA and other companies are really tough on vintage.

Are there any 9s or 10s in the bunch? Or am I looking at 4-7 for most of them? Also, I have a sealed JP southern islands mew - do I rip and grade, or sell sealed?
