California DMV is trying to charge me $105 fee on my tag renewal
I paid online on April 26th (I always write on the envelope when I renew these things), they mailed my tag out on the 29th (bottom right envelope). My bank is not showing the payment, but I did not get any indication at all that there was a transaction issue.
Today, my dad (car is registered in his name, but it's primarily my car or the family car when needed) opened a letter from the DMV saying the renewal was not paid for and they now want $283.
The original renewal fee was $178. That is a $105 penalty. Keep in mind, my tags wouldn't even be expired right now as my renewal payment wasn't due until June 14th. I thought bounced check fees were only $30 from looking at past threads on this issue?
I plan to go to a physical DMV, call a representative, all the usual, but am I crazy to think asking $105 for a non-late, their-end problem is ridiculous?
And I know it's their problem, because there's consecutive years worth of local news reporting on this being the DMV's problem:
