Would I Fit In at the YMCA as a Single Adult in My 40s?
Hello!
I’m a single woman in my 40s with no kids, and I’m thinking about joining the YMCA of Silicon Valley (probably El Camino or East Palo Alto).
One thing I’m trying to figure out is whether I’d fit in.
When I look at the YMCA’s Instagram and website, I mostly see photos of kids, camps, and family programs. I know that’s a big part of what the YMCA does, but it makes me wonder what the adult community is actually like.
I’ve previously been a member at City Sports and YogaSix. They were fine for working out, but everyone just exercised and left, so I never really made any friends or found a sense of community.
What attracts me to the YMCA is the variety of classes (Zumba, yoga, Tai Chi, etc.) and especially the Hike Club. I’m hoping to find a place where I can exercise regularly, get to know people over time, and become part of a community.
For those of you who are members:
- Would a single adult in their 40s feel like they fit in?
- Are there many adults without kids, or is it mostly families?
- Has anyone actually made friends through the YMCA?
- What’s the Hike Club like? Do people usually come alone or with friends or family?
I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences before I decide to join. Thanks!
