Tank Advice and General Cichlid Questions

Through certain circumstances I have acquired a handful of African Cichlids. At the moment they are all babies. We bought a brand new Fluval 9 gallon with in tank filtration. I've heard that a 55 gallon is the best tank size for when they grow but I'm not sure if that applies to me because of how many fish I have, and how many fish I may want to acquire in the future.

At the moment I have...

11 maingano

4 yellow labs

and 2 of what I believe are Zebra shell dwellers but I'm not positive (good picture below)

In the future I would like to get one or two types of peacock Cichlids. Is it possible to easily keep Mbuna and Peacocks together, and is there any specific Mbuna and Peacocks I should stay away from keeping. Also, do I have to buy pairs/schools for certain fish, and what genders should I not keep together? Thanks for the help in advance!!!
