Big Box or base game + expansions? Coming back to Carcassonne after years away

Looking for a bit of guidance from people who know the current landscape better than I do.

I grew up playing Carcassonne with the River and Abbot expansions, but that copy lives at my parents' place. I'm looking to buy my own copy now, and I just realized there are an absurd number of expansions out there. I'm a bit lost on where to start.

I noticed there's a Big Box version that bundles a bunch of expansions together. Ive seen older big box for sale at cheaper prices but there is also a new one. Is that the move, or am I better off grabbing the base game and picking up one or two expansions on the side? And if it's the latter, which one or two expansions would you recommend starting with?
